Sorry to hear about the roof problems. You would think that a 13 month old roof would have had any problems with the fitting sorted and be good for years to come. Once it's sorted and you get back behind the wheel you will soon forget about all the scraping and have the satisfaction of a job done well.

good luck with it. Ian & Sue.

Shame about the roof leak, do you know who did it as it would be a good idea to let members know so we can avoid them.
If the car passed its last MOT with that much play at the steering wheel it should not have. There should be a maximum of 13mm play at the steering wheel rim before the road wheels move, this with an “average” size steering wheel.

Hi ian sue, i had missed your message. Im not a million miles away im from the york area
The company based on the invoice are called SC motorworks in shiremoor, They look to be a bmw specialist which is strange considering how this has been fitted. I feel sorry for the guy who i purchased the car from, as i rememeber him saying he rated the company who did the roof as they do all his other bmws aswell. I mean they could be a good garage just from my personal experience from what ive got infront of me is not what you would expect for the price that was paid.
I wish i had taken a pictuire before we started to remove all the adhesive on the canvas as it was packed full and its been a nightmare to get most of it off before i even attempt the 21 year old butyl seals .

Steering rack yeah i agree, i must admit that all the lower front joints had been worn out too so maybe it had hidden some of the play untill it has all been changed and polybushed. I had tried winding the preload pinion on the steering rack in for a while which did help but has restricted wheel centreing massively, so can only really be a temporary measure.
Onwards and upwards though, i did get the car to tinker with as a project anyway. My daily doesnt need much maintance and its a good deviation from a 9-5 desk job through the week to keep me busy everynow and again

Sounds like would have been better replaced at a specialist
