Hello all. I'm the proud new owner of a 2000 2.0 Z3 in velvet blue. I've been looking at these for a while and finally took the plunge last week!

I'm still getting used to the car, as I'm more familiar with more modern cars generally. But one thing I've noticed is that the gear changes aren't as smooth as I expected, especially between 1st and 2nd. And sometimes getting into 1st can be a bit of a struggle. Is this normal? There's no grinding or any weird noises once it's in gear, it's just getting into gear that can be tougher than I'd expect..

I'm based in West Yorkshire and look forward to getting involved in the group and any meet ups.

Hello and :welcome: from fellow 2.0 owner there’s not many of us.

Never had a problem with getting into 1st but 1st to second was tricky if you tried to rush it, two things to research, gearbox fluid, lots of differing opinions out there I went with Amsoil synthetic which made a great improvement to the gear change.

Then there’s the clutch delay value, mine didn’t have one fitted so worth checking.

Have fun😁

P.S Lovely colour combination 👍

Yeah I've noticed there aren't as many 2.0 out there, I'm hoping that's a good thing haha

I've read so many things about the sticky gear change issue, I was even more confused by the end of it. I'll try an oil change and hopefully that helps:)

Gearbox fluid change is a must if you don't know if its ever been changed, BMW say they are filled for life but that's codswallop nothing lasts forever.
Choice of fluid is up to you, Amsoil is used by a lot of people on here but any good brand gearbox oil will do fine, you will notice a difference with fresh fluid in there. Also worth renewing the Diff oil whilst your at it, that was also filled for life!!

Good to know thanks, looks like it will be going in for an oil change soon. Hoping to get the control arm bushes changed whilst I'm at it as the steering seems to have a mind of its own on rough roads!

Hi and welcome from me in Scotland :welcome:.

Nice individual model colour that you wont see many around that colour even at meets etc .

As for the control arm bushes a good option if you want to tighten it up without going full on solid poly bushes
Solid rubber ones are a great option

They pull everything together but still have some compliance i have them fitted to 2 of my zeds.
You can still get them on Autodoc at around 55 a set with bolts.

Thanks Stephen. And that's really helpful, I've read some differing opinions on whether to go with poly bushes or stick to rubber. Nice to have a take on it from someone whose actually done it. Food for thought..

Hi mate, tried searching for these last night but can't seem to find the solid rubber type like the ones you shared in the pic. You don't have a link for them do you? @Stevo7682
