New tyres

Ive just priced up a set of Avon ZZ5 with black circles £400. Anyone have any feedback before I take the plunge?
Paid £360 for Kumhos for the Z4 through black circle seem a good tyre road noise grip etc

Are the tyres of a type where you could fit them to the opposite side of the car and wear the other edges of the tyres?

Tony.

If they are wearing on the inside, then swapping wheels to the opposite side of the car still means the wear is on the inside..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to swap the tyre on the wheel itself to get the wear on the outside,
This can still be done with some directional tyres, as after the tyres have been turned on the rim., you then swap the wheels to the opposite side.
The only ones to watch for are those that say "Outside" on the side wall, They cant be turned on the rim.
Directional tread patterns with an arrow on the sidewall can be turned.

Good job you're retiring...... ;)

That would be fairly obvious wouldn't it?

When I did replace the rear tyres ( 245/40R17) I got a price from my local tyre dealer ( dealt with them for years) and he quoted me £135 each, that seemed very high and he explained that was for the ones with BMW star on,but he could supply the Merc ones (MO) for £101 each. I had a look on the car and my existing ones were in fact Merc not BMW , so have two Merc tyres again. Just completely rediculas to pay extra £68 for the BMW ones.
I would always stay with the BMW tyres for the X1 as I understand some other tyres play up with the 4wd system, giving dealer a way out of warrantee work.

I have now noticed the front Yokohamas are starting to crack, still lots of tread but they have done 24,000 miles since fitted in July 2013. Will now get another pair of Contis to match rear

The rear Contis are not having the inside wear trouble I had on the previous set , and were still grand at the last MoT when I could inspect them on a ramp (under 1,000 miles since MoT)

I have been using various types of Falken for the last twenty years or so, and rate them highly - better than the Pilot Sports the car had when new. They are good value, great hooligan tyres, and with the Strong Strut body and butt strut braces, I get at least 20,000 miles from the rears, without much edge weardown.

I was once told by a BMW Car Club tyre snob that it was 'Folly to fit budget tyres to a powerful RWD car.' I noticed that his M3 wore Dunlop tyres, so took delight in telling him that Dunlop were owned by the same company as Falken . . . retreat of the tyre snob!

I've also used Falken tyres on my two Z3 M Coupes sinced 2005, first FK452, FK453 and the latest FK 510 fitted last year. I took the advice of John Safe ( Current BMWCC President) who I met at Gaydon back in 2005 when I'd bought my first Coupe who told me that he used his Z3 M Coupe on Nurburgring where he did instructing at the time and he found that Falkens were a great all round tyre which gave good value for money. I've used them ever since, mind I only go 17k miles out of my last set of FK453s.

Back in my days of dealing with tyres around 5-6 years was considered enough. It's not just a ploy to sell more tyres, y'know, I've seen plenty of tyres with loads of tread left that went bang under normal driving conditions due to age.

Time really does fly past , its only when you see trouble you have a look at the age of them. Many years ago I had to change the original set on a Freelander that were only 4 years old they had sidewall cracking.
