Hi guys,

Still feeling sick for selling my E46 330i convertible last year so needed a new toy!

Just picked up an absolute base model 1.8 Z3 in silver for £400. Body work and hood are good, but it’s all a bit uninspiring!

MOT until March, just needs a wishbone apparently (if it’s anything like the E46 ones that’ll be fun ) so at least I can take the kids out in it. My toddler gets as excited by a Mondeo as he does a Lamborghini! Doesn’t care as long as it got an engine!

Any way, I’m aware these aren’t really an investment at this level, but I’m planning on some basic mods early on to get a big engine in there and upgrade the wheels & handling.

Engine wise I’m thinking the quickest route to a 6 pot (assuming 328 engine/donor car would be easiest, but haven’t researched yet)

Look forward to chatting to some of you along the way and picking up some pearls of wisdom

Please feel free to point me in the direction of your favourite threads to save me repeating questions, I’ll have a good search too.

:welcome:to the forum from West Cumbria. I think one or two have considered an engine swap at some point and there's more to it than just dropping in a 6 pot 2.8 I believe.
@Sean d considered it in his 2.0 but dismissed it due to the work involved I think. Probably better off making mild tweaks to the one you have or just buying a 2.8.

Welcome, but i wouldnt bother putting a 2.8 in as you can buy a whole 2.8 for so little money
Thanks Sharpey, that seems to be the general consensus

I haven’t even touched this one yet, but it was cheap enough to be worth a punt. By the time I’ve done the lower arm and sorted the drivers window (it’s stuck down, door panel was mostly unattached so guessing it’s been looked at prior), other that that it’s MOT’d and starts & runs.

If I love it (all bar the power) I can sell it on and look for a 2.8.

I hadn’t looked into these at all before as I was thinking of another 4 seater convertible, but I’ve just seen a near mint 2.8 that’s currently on £1,200! Bargain!

Hi Dave and welcome from me near Lincoln. Same advice from me too from the angle that you could struggle to insure it if you shove a 2.8 lump.in it. Well it on and look for a 2.8 project. Plenty about. Or buy a Z4.

Tony.

Hi and welcome, I did indeed look into transplanting a 2.8 lump in my 2.0 but you also need the stronger gear box and LSD, so I sold it for just under 4k and bought a 2.8 for £700, now that makes sense :D
