Another option could be to just get the bad panels resprayed and see if the rest will come up with machine polishing, i know you can get a lot of sun fade out. Maybe Russell O could advise if it is possible and be able to view it to give you a price.
Russell O hope you dont mind me sending him your way.If you do i appologise
I believe he in Leicestershire

Was thinking about that, but there are a few other small areas. Will get in contact. If only for advice. Need to get rear springs done first as both broken.

Later this week my mate is letting me practise on his 02 325 as it is s-te and got lots of sun fade, swirls and scratches. So i will take a before and after photo to see how it comes up to give you an idea. Bearing in mind he is just happy to see some sort of improvement and the car has not seen polish since around 2008 as it was my sons before he sold it to my mate

How much can you polish out with the clear Coat?

Reading up on the net you should have at least 38 microns but can be as much as 102 micron and a medium cut should take away 2 to 3 microns but this can vary.

i see it's a few weeks since you originally asked the questions, but if you are still worried about the temp gauge, get someone to check if your car has any fault codes showing. A faulty thermostat will show a fault code.

Hi Paul!
It's common for old thermostat on 1.9 to close correctly when engine totally cold, but not anymore when engine warm. I had the same issue: when I remove it was looking good and in order, but probably "tired". Like we are, after a certain age! I suggest you to replace the water pump too , when you will work on the thermostat!
In no case head gasket; this could happen when thermostat failed and get stuck closed.
Dan

Absolutely @Zeti no sense leaving the waterpump in unless it has been recently changed to a metal impeller type even though the plastic impeller ones do last about 70-75K miles. Also I agree about the head gasket not being a problem unless of course it stays closed. There are threads on replacing the pump and thermostat in the archives @Paul M! Good luck JIM
