Your prospective purchase could be a money pit by the sound of it, emissions and water intrusion and roof condition seem to be its problem areas and that's before considering the bodywork and underpinnings. Sounds like there are better ones out there from your description. When looking for cars always do a MOT history check and see what it has done or advisories.

It doesn’t sound to me like one worth bothering with either Col. If you’re looking for a smaller engine see what’s available in the 2.0 6cyl. market.

Looking for a project, found one 1998 M44.
To be honest it looks really nice it was stored in garage and underneath looks like it also engine looks like it was stored in dry garage and looked after before current owner bought it. She Can’t drive it as she hurt her back. The water leak is new but it failed emissions I suspect is cat so I was budgeting £1000 at least for emissions and roof being sorted. But there is a 2.8 on her for £2295 that sounds interesting 🤔. Did not check and it failed on emissions in 2022 so I suspect they put a cheap cat on it.
Cheers Rob

Cat at least that if you go OEM. New roof around 350 - 400. It soon makes it an unrealistic proposition in my eyes, but I admit I’m not a big fan of the 4 cyl. cars.

Horses for courses, happy with my 4 Pot 1.8 M43 Z3 but its a very low mileage example with nothing to fix up after I sorted a few issues. Bored I acquired a 2.5 Z4 as an addition to the Z3, sorted a few issues and installed heated seat pads. Impressed with the extra poke but overall prefer the looks of the Z3 and it performs enough for me. Run the Z4 year around but the Z3 is sorned and garaged over Winter. 6 Pot Z3 would certainly be something to consider there are plenty out there. Just be aware of the usual problems, outer cover sills rust, oil leaks from cam cover and oil filter housing to block gasket, rusty brake pipes and engine management and Airbag lights on the dash. Always a good idea to scan any prospective purchases and MOT History.
