I've never seen one outside a school or old folks home or in a residential street where kids play. There's speeders in those places but just not enough to earn a fortune in fines.
To be fair that (is) was outside a primary school, and 50m from a residential home - re my previous message, the instructor said that the camera was apparently installed after a child was knocked down and killed - how true that is I dont know but I hope not

The road itself is probably a mile long and down hill, apart from 1 slight bend (just before the camera) its quite wide and the majority of houses are set back. You can get up speed easily - thankfully my house is a right turn just before it so I rarely go straight past it but I can see how an accident could have happened.

Ironically I recently took a speed awareness course (shock horror) and one of the videos they used was going down that road and the old speed camera as it was. The instructor stopped the video and asked what we thought might be next...

I told him, round the bend there is a new estate, just across from a good pub/resturant. 50m further on theres a pub on the left and a good chippy, the shop on the corner is alright but mind out for the kebab shop, it isnt the best... avoid the donner.

he wasn't impressed
I did a speed awareness course. The name of the course sounds like it's supposed to help you be aware of your own speed. But it's not. They should rename the course to "Speed Limit Awareness". The whole course, well 90% of it, is spent learning about all the ways on and around the road that will tell you what the speed limit is.

The instructor started the course by saying that by the end of the course we would be able to read the road and the environment to know the speed limit at any time. I said "If they just put proper speed limit signs up instead of cryptic clues then most of us wouldn't need to be sat here.

He wasn't impressed.

I said exactly the same thing when I went on my course too. The 2 guys who led the course did agree (they were both bikers and came on their bikes) when I quoted how speed signs are deployed in Florida. Dead simple, easy to see and understand, not guessing how far it is between lamp posts or even if there are any.

Tony.

as i said in my previous post the A590 from Ulverston to junction 36 on the m6 is monitored with average speed cameras according, to the local paper the speed limit has been reduced from 60 to 50 mph for its entire length but there are still speed limit signs all along it saying 60 mph or national speed limit applies its all very confusing

The speed limit is what the sign says. Not what the newspaper or anyone else says.

According to the highways agency website the speed is reduced from 60 to 50 except for a short length of dual carriageway which is reduced from 70 to 60 , but the road signs don't say that and they have installed 19 average speed cameras
