I have just installed a new softop to my z3 supplied by car hood warehouse cost £565 including vat and delivery
Time to fit was 6 hour's and I am very happy with the finished roof check out photos

I had a new roof fitted at Car Hood Warehouse about fifteen years ago, and it is still perfect. The thinner window does not suffer from being folded, and seems pretty scratch-resistant. I use a home-made hood protector, made from an old fleece blanket to protect the window and fabric, with a piece of pipe lagging in a pocket to reduce the amount of bending when the window is folded up.

Looks like you've done a great job there Robert how awkward did you find it to do.

Looking for some advice I have found the roof I need but my current Z3 has a headliner / soundproof. There is no mention of this in the purchase so my question is the headliner reusable or do i need to look for roof and headliner ?

It wasn't to bad I used mastic tape around the rear support bar under rear window and installed new tension cables that run above the side windows I was let down by trimmers I live in Central Scotland I would have no hesitation in doing it again

Top tip keep the plastic pipes that hold your headliner to the metal frame as you will need the pipes when you glue the hanging fabric
Inside the car use the pipes to hold the fabric in place till the glue sets then remove the pipes it will give you a great finish as for the rest of the headliner bin it hope this helps
 
Sorry to sound lost, I am sure it will all become clear once I start,
So you kept you original headliner and soundproof and the repalced the roof ?
Did you glue the headliner to the roof ?
You used mastic to stick the headliner or the roof ? to the rear frame support under the clear window ?
The cable bit I get.

Sorry if this seems confused, just trying to consider the approach. I would like to do this in the next few weeks.

Remove the head liner before you Bin it remove the plastic black pipes that hold it to the roof frame as the pipes are handy for when you glue the fabric that hangs down inside the car from the new roof as you have to glue the hanging fabric to the frame the black pipes keep the glued fabric in place once dry you can remove them
The rear metal frame that is bolted to the rear bye 18. 10 mm bolts I put mastic tape round metal frame when you tighten the bolts it compresses the mastic making it water proof

Resurrecting an old thread.. Mike I look the like of this.! I've recently purchased a Z3 whose rear window had been replaced shortly before I purchased it. I've also been enjoying reading your excellent book on Z3's that I got as a Christmas present!

A few questions

How thick is the fleece?

Is that 15mm or 32mm pipe insulation you are using in "the pocket"

Is "the pocket" positioned in a special place or roughly half way down the rear window

My Z3 has an electric roof I think the fleece would fall off if I tried retracting electrically.. Is your fleece held in place by velcro or anything during the retraction and putting up of the roof??

I bought polyester polar fleece on Amazon. Seems to work okay. It’s about 2mm thick. It comes in 1.6m wide rolls. I got 2m which I cut in half and the resulting 1m x 0.8m piece is the perfect size. The fleece doesn’t need to be held on. It kinda sticks to the fabric roof and you can stretch it a bit to make it stay there while you take the roof down. Only a pain when it’s windy. When you raise the roof it just falls down towards the boot. I didn’t do the piece of pipe lagging. I imagine it won’t fold up easily. The main thing to check is that you don’t link the window when you put the roof down.
