New project 2.8

View attachment 120065 View attachment 120067 View attachment 120069 View attachment 120071 View attachment 120073 Here we go again, 2.8 prefacilft with m52tu 1999.
Recently purchased off here and arrived today, to say I am over the moon would be an understatement and James really did this down on his add,
It has 79k miles, history up to 66k, stacks of paper work including all the bmw booklets, tool kit looks like new, first aid kit and wheel bag, interior is in top condition, roof is great, body work is as you would expect of a 20 yo z3, barley any rust with lots of knocks and dings, it's also been owned by james and his dad since 2001, if I had storage I would put it away as it is.
So my dilemma is what to do with it, without doubt it's getting a full panel off respray, needs at least one new sill and one mirror,
Oh, engine and gearbox are as sweet as, however it needs a suspension upgrade as it makes my 2.8 feel like an f1 sports car.

Glad you're pleased with it Sean, it was a real emotional wrench letting it go, but the reality is I'm no car enthusiast (beyond the driving part) and I couldn't do it justice. I'm really glad it's gone to someone that's going to care for it, I did the same with my old triumph dolomite years back when that needed some love.

Really looking forward to watching your progress and sharing some updates with my dad, he used to make a point of looking around it every time he came over!

Cheers and good luck :)

Too many variables like time of year offered for sale IF prices have dropped and I don’t think they have, our cars are increasingly becoming rarer and rarer so best to hold on to them for prices to increase...that’s if you’re in the market to sell.

Thanks James, it will be restored to its former glory and should look excellent once done, it's now on axle stands and I started prepping the inner sills today, the rust around the jacking points is just surface and not heavy at all, I'll start stripping the shell off this week, should be done for xmas with any luck

If you are after new sills order as soon as possible, just bought some and there was a two month waiting time:(

Thanks for the heads up, I need to get the other sill off to see if it needs renewing

I think you confuse me with a person of lesser talent :D
Its not your talent Sean, that goes without saying, its your attention to detail, meticulous workmanship and out of the box creativity that puts a strain on any timeline.

Thanks pal, but no creativity needed on this as its staying stock

:whistle:Maybe someone out there with a stock 1.8 in Atlanta blue with low mileage maybe looking for a 2.8 stock low mileage Atlanta blue. Just saying. A pair maybe nice that’s if you were looking at selling on. All hypothetical though Sean :whistle::whistle:

Watch this space pal

Had an hour after work and got stuck in, removed rear bumper, wheel arch liners, N/S sill and wing, got the inner sill fully prepped and ready for etch primer, good to see there was only surface rust around the jacking points

Do you use any rust stabiliser or converter? Seem to remembering asking you before and you said no?

What would you call a quality acid etch primer? I expect you use trade stuff. I’ve been using UPol.

One thing I do Robert is to put infra red heaters on the area after it has been cleaned of, I also spray with spirit wipe, this helps remove any moisture that is trapped in the rust pits, if this is not done its clear to see the next day as staining reapears
