If it is a big end bearing shot, unusual in a BMW, then it might be worth taking the sump off and seeing if it's worth just replacing the bearings. If that is the case the engines been run without oil, so might be a leak in the engine. If so there should be plenty of evedence all over the engine bay.

Hi @Terry Crow, to the forum from me too just down the road (ish) in Staffordshire. I'd go the recon engine route as well. Lots of advice here on the forum. When you get back on the road there's lots of meets and cruise to go to. We can meet face to face then.

Welcome Terry, I'm also an oldie, from Canada and @spurs fan in a coupe has one of my old 98 1.9 z3 he's breaking right now. The engine has about 110k on it but was checked out by an auto tech prior to my deciding not to import it to Canada and selling it to Andy. It has new belts installed and checked out clean and would be a great addition to your car. It also has just recently been steam cleaned and showed no leaks. Andy also can supply about anything else you need! Might be worth a trip down to hear it or get a recording sent of it running. Good luck, JIM
