Well, I took the 3.0 in for her MOT yesterday. I've only done just over 7,000 miles and in total she's done 63,900 and passed last year with no advisories so I thought no problem. Checked the usual stuff and off I went. Amazed when the tester came over and said "she's borderline for a pass". "What", I said and he went on to explain the advisories. Front ball joints both OS and NS, rear service brake and handbrake only just met braking requirements. So just goes to show low mileage doesn't necessarily mean no problems, I mean who's heard of ball joints failing at 64,000 miles:eek:
Some work to do before our Euro trip:rolleyes:

Which ball joints Dave inner, or outer like on Dawn's car?

Tony.

Outer like on Dawns. Haven't had a chance to get her up and see how bad it is. Will report back when I have.....probably on a PM:whistle:

My e46 needed ball joints at around 55k miles.

Doubt the Z3 ones last much more, mine were done at around 80k and there is some play at 130k now...

I am in the South East which is renowned for billiard table smooth roads.....NOT!

Z3 handbrake is pants anyway - would being parked up all it’s life stretch the cable more?

Sounds like it needs some use and abuse to get back into shape :coolsteer)

Dunno Dino, the 2.2 has done 186,000 on her original ones:whistle:

May do but I never put the handbrake on when she's parked up at home:)

Your 2.2 is legendary- I had a Honda and even that needed ball joints at 185k miles!

Do you fly it over the road rather than drive it - that will lessen the wear for sure =))

Fairly common from what I've read since owning mine Dave. Think your very lucky with the 2.2 mate to he honest.
But I agree, low miles doesn't always pay off.

One good thing about the Z3 is that the ball joints are easily replaceable, unlike the E30 and E46 where you have to replace the whole arm.
the hanbrake is fine if it is properly adjusted.

Definitely agree re the parking rake Mike. The biggest issue with it is lack of service, and the connection between the end of the cable and the shoe expander seizes up, this is because they never get lubricated, this is because no one removes the callipers and discs to be able to.

Tony.

I fitted two Meyle 'heavy duty' version outer ball joints, two years later an advisory on slight play in one
But then the same station failed my new 'daily' £150 Focus on all 4 suspension arm bushes, agreed the fronts were toast but the rears had nothing wrong with them when I did them. He had used a 3 foot pry bar in the direction of the voids and said there was movement - well there would be wouldn't there!! Down to the tester, although shaker plates on the front b/j's should be conclusive.
Why did they delete grease nipples, one pump every 2k miles!

Well done on the pass mate:thumbsup:

Mine failed on an outer ball joint a couple years ago at around 68k, so not uncommon by looks of it

A pass is a pass mate but at least you know what's what

This is an interesting approach for the MOT tester to take. I had a not too dissimilar experience on Tuesday when the Tester took a hammer and banged repeatedly on the new suspension arm!!! I kid you not!!!

I didn't know it was advisable to leave the handbrake off if a car is parked up indefinitely...is this because it can seize onto what???

It's a pass...and a "To Do List'. It'll keep you out of trouble :whistle:=))

The handbrake friction material will rust onto the brake surface in the case of the Z3 the brake shoes are separate but built into the rear brake disc centre section. Drums are the worst to un sieze as you cannot get to see any of the components. Moisture in the air will corrode the drums.

Thanks, @Brian4 I'm learning so much here!:)

I think that sort of activity would fall outside of the testers remit :wideyed:
