Hi guys
I have a 2.8 Z3 but the tacho is reading too high. I have done a systems check ie holding down the tripometer while turning on the ignition.
It appears that my car thinks it has a 4 cylinder engine instead of a 6 !!!!
I assume this info is stored on the code plug in the back of the clocks.
A previous owner has probably put in new clocks or a new code plug.
My question is can I recode the code plug myself or do I have to buy another one
Thanks
Hugh

Hello and welcome to the forum. You need to get a code reader and check what, if any fault codes are stored in the engine diagnostics.

Hi, welcome from Mansfield.

As others have said, first thing to do is get the codes read.

That’s what I’ll do then, I think a friend has a code reader. Problem is I have no OBD poet only the 6 pin under the bonnet. I bought a cheap adapter, I hope he can read codes through this.

Your car is pre 2000 then? My 2000 Z3 had the 17 pin connector under the dash at the right hand side. The socket under the bonnet is 20 pin if I recall right, the adapters you can buy are what you need to plug in to the car. Good luck finding the issue, please keep us posted on your progress.

Tony.

Hello and welcome. Good luck with finding the cause. Airbag light on mine, once the weather warms up a little I shall plug in my reader.
