Hello all, I have just joined the forum as I am about to become a Z3 owner, having had a number of classic MG's I have decided to add a more modern soft top alongside my MG Midget. I live in East Yorkshire near the coast so looking forward to some drives to the coast in it.

It is a 2001 Z3 1.9, in red with only 55,000 miles on the clock. I am a little confused about the 1.9 engine. It seems to have changed from the initial engine and I have also read about 1.8 engines. Will mine be a detuned 1.9 engine (approx. 116 bhp). The early ones look to have about 138bhp. Is it a 16v engine and the old ones were 8v ? Are the later 1.9's noticeably less powerful than the early ones ?

Any advice much appreciated.

Harry

I am about to head off on holiday for a week, so I will be picking the Zed up when I return. Its a 4 hour drive to collect it from Norwich, but will be worth it. I have put a deposit down unseen, so fingers crossed :)

Hello and welcome to the forum. If you're used to driving an MG Midget you wont be disappointed with a 1.9 Z3. A good friend of mine used to live in Ottringham and I was a frequent visitor to your area

I traded in a 1972 round wheel arch MG midget for my first Z3 (a one year old 1.8) in 1998. The midget was as rusty as a rusty thing. Even the 1.8 felt fast in comparison (as long as you didn't turn the aircon on), and bits didn't fall off.:)

Ian MC - It is a rubber bumper Midget 1500 that I have so it neither handles well, nor revs freely. If I am happy with the Z3 then I will probably let the Midget go. I have had it 10 years. It is in good nick as it had a heritage shell in 1999. But I feel I have done my time with it now. I sold my MG TF135 last year, so the Z3 is replacing that. The TF was nice in that it was in the MG fold, but I didn't like the harsh drive or rear engine. I have always hankered after a Z3, and red is the colour for me. Its a shame I'm away on holiday for the next week otherwise I would have been down to Norwich to collect the Z3.

Jack Ratt - I have been through Ottringham today on my way back from Spurn Point to Hedon.

I had MGs (midgets and MGBs) from the mid 70's to the late 1990s (mainly as second cars). The last 20 years has included the 1.8 Z3, a S50 MR, S54 MC and last year a 1.9 M44 Z3. I like the build quality and more modern build, but its not too new (technology wise). I really like my 1.9, you have made a good choice @Harrymail:thumbsup:

Well the Z3 is home. 150 miles driven back from Norfolk and it is running fine. Feels like a nearly new car. Hit some heavy rain and no leaks. Gave it good wash when I got home and it is tucked up in the garage now. I am amazed at how good the bodywork is on a 17 year old car. Just the odd stone chip. No dings or scrapes. Good drivers seat bolster too. Drivers seat is at its highest and just clicks, no movement up and down, so will have to have a look at that. Overall very happy :)

Welcome from Hertfordshire, I'm sure you will find the Z nippy enough. A bit different to the midget though, a bit more difficult to get sideways:whistle:
