Hello all, I have just joined the forum as I am about to become a Z3 owner, having had a number of classic MG's I have decided to add a more modern soft top alongside my MG Midget. I live in East Yorkshire near the coast so looking forward to some drives to the coast in it.

It is a 2001 Z3 1.9, in red with only 55,000 miles on the clock. I am a little confused about the 1.9 engine. It seems to have changed from the initial engine and I have also read about 1.8 engines. Will mine be a detuned 1.9 engine (approx. 116 bhp). The early ones look to have about 138bhp. Is it a 16v engine and the old ones were 8v ? Are the later 1.9's noticeably less powerful than the early ones ?

Any advice much appreciated.

Harry

Hi and welcome and hope the weather warms up soon.

If you put the last 7 digits of the vin number into this it should list the engine in yours. I think it is the M43 single OHC engine.

Welcome to the forum
Facelift models had the 8v engine 118bhp earlier models had the 138bhp M44
Yes the earlier ones were quicker.
The facelift models were available with a six cylinder 2.0 150bhp closer in performance to the pre facelift 1.9.

Hello and :welcome: to the forum. I believe the original car had the single cam 1.8 M43 engine the 1.9 had the twin cam 16 valve M44 engine but when the facelift came out it reverted to the M43. I think ithe change was emissions related.

Thanks Paul, I did think that was the case. Not collected the car yet but hopefully I will be happy with the performance.

:welcome: @Harrymail. Your new zed looks very nice .
My father in law has a 1.9 m43, not what I'd say is slow by a long way. In fact I thought it was quite nippy and has lighter steering than my 2.8, oh and a smoother gear box.
They are excellent fun cars, you'll enjoy it.

Steve.

This might help https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Z3

Lists engine types, dates and powers.

Posting a photo of the engine bay will also help us identify which series it is if you think it has been changed.

As mentioned realism or use this for vin check https://www.bmwvin.com

Looks a nice one!

Welcome.
