Hi all, yesterday I bought a 1998 Z3 2.8 that has been sitting in a garage unused and neglected for several years. Today I decided to join this forum in order to get some expert advice as I proceed with the restoration project. Thanks for being here and I look forward to spending time discussing Z3's.

Welcome from Canada, Terry! Any relation to me Dad Gaz Hyde? Enjoy the car and all that top down sunshine. Any questions, feel free to ask and usually a route to solution shows up within hours if not minutes. JIM

Wow, I have never used a forum before and all the warm welcomes are a nice surprise. If I do my talking in the wrong place someone please kick me into the right direction.

Jim, I don't know of any relatives in Canada. Could be wrong though, it is a small world.

Judging from the all the old documents in the glove box she was last insured and inspected in 2010.

On with the story. She has 100k on the clock, I drove it about 300 kilometres home and it ran great when I could keep it between the lines. Wishbone bushings on order, and rocking chair seat bushings on order too. I spent the day yesterday going over it and only found one issue that really concerns me. I drained the engine oil and it looked like I was draining oil from a diesel. No signs of water or other contaminants but it sure was black. As there are no other issues with the engine I am trying to think of some way to flush her insides before putting new oil in. Any thoughts on that would be much appreciated. Back in the old days we would have poured in a quart of kerosene and drove it for awhile but I don't think that is such a good idea now a days.

Right now she is up on the lift with all her shoes off, and they were a real pain to get off. I'll post some pictures the next time she is on the ground.

Terry

Hi and :welcome: from me to here in Mansfield England from another 2.8 owner. Your seat bushes are available from aceman on here. I'm sure he'll be along shortly to let you know what's what with those.
Oil wise I think I'd be tempted to simply put a cheap oil in and run the engine for 30 mins and drain it again. Then put a decent quality oil in. Should be fine. It takes a hell of a lot of abuse to destroy one of these engines. Look forward to seeing the pics. :coolsteer)

Hi Terry, great news that you were able to drive the car home with really little difficulty. I agree with Dave about the oil. You can put an addative in but I'll leave that to someone closer to recommend a product. As for relatives in Canada, Gaz Hyde is our illustrious leader and moderator for the site in the UK. He at one point spoke of leaving his Zed to his kids so I adopted him and became Gaz Jr. As the oldest I expect Dad to pass the car to me after he has his accident. Haven't set a date yet but he's looking over his shoulder I'm sure. Hope you enjoy the forum, it's a lot of fun. JIM

Hi, Terry and welcome to the forum from the other side of the pond. Its good to hear that at least you can drive your car. Many years ago, there used to be a product put out by Quaker State Oil that was added to the engine oil and you could run your engine for about 5 minutes, idle only, and it would clean all the oil passages and ports. The car was not to be driven or put under any load as this was a cleaning agent. After the 5 minutes, you were to drain your oil and change the filter and add the recommended oil for the car. I don't know if there is a similar product out there any more, but you can look at an auto store. If not, there may be a high detergent oil that you can use temporarily, then change the filter and oil. Frankie

Try this:

Not sure if these products will help you. Investigate them well before using. Frankie

Hola & Bienvenida Terry!

I'm with the others on the oil flush - I've just picked up my new baby Zee, took it for an oil & filter change on the same day & I'll get it changed again in a few weeks; it may seem a waste of money using the right fully synthetic oil as a flush but I think it's a small price to pay to "clean" the inside of the engine - I'm no mechanic, just "OCD when it comes to my Zee" (& that rhymes!) Basta!

Thanks Tony, I'll look into finding some of the Forte Engine Oil Flush. If I can't find it in Spain I am sure someone in England will be happy to ship it to me.

Next problem, my headlights are all scratched up so I am looking for a new set of angle eyes. Does anyone know the difference between an E36 and a E37? Most of the ones I find say they are for E37 and I thought my car was E36.???
