New Keys

The shoe repair shop near where I work claims to be able to do 75% of cars. Maybe someone near you could do the same. A fraction of the main dealer cost.

Yes, this is normally a Timpsons franchise, and only some of their branches are able to do it, but they still charge a lot. It is company policy apparently that they will not cut a key purchased from someone else, sadly.

The cheapest key you can order form BMW is the wallet one:

That will include a transponder already set for your car. If just the wallet key is not enough of a fall back, you can always buy a blank from eBay, get it cut, then move the transponder from the wallet key to the new one.

I just went to the BMW website, apparently you need to drive there in the vehicle with full registration docs, ID plus separate proof of address before they will order one for you.

I used Timpsons for my spare key. It doesn't have the transponder but unlocks the car, and starts it which is all I wanted and I think I paid £40 for it. It also turns off the immob/alarm but obviously not remotely

OK, so I have a pre-facelift 1998 z3 1.9 auto.

It takes the old style keys with the transponder and key led light - see pic.

Today I went into my local BMW dealership with reg details, dvr lic + separate proof of address... wanted a spare.. just in case.

They charged me £62 for a new key that was ready and with them the very next day!!! ***Will not post so you must collect.

They work from your VIN, so if the locks have been changed and BMW didnt do it then they won't be able to help you.

Happy with the service! :)

Got to be worth a try.
Ta

From the BMW web site

You can order a replacement key from one of our approved BMW Centres.

If you still have one remaining key, you will need to take your car and 1 form of personal ID and 1 form of Address ID along with your vehicle’s V5C logbook to your preferred BMW Centre*. If you have lost both keys and cannot access the vehicle, you will need to arrange for your car to be transported to your preferred Centre along with the required documents.

* A photocard Driving Licence cannot be used for both the personal ID and Address ID purposes.

These are security measures that our Centres must follow to protect you. You’ll also need to sign for your new key when collecting.

You can find your local BMW Centre here.

Have you been supplied with this plastic key recently? my BMW dealer told me the only key available now is the standard key (no transponder) with the light in it. cheers

I use spare-keys-4-u on eBay. Send a good clear photo of your key and they can copy it. A BMW key is about 12 quid and you swap over the EWS chip.

170€ for a key with remote in Greece and they asked for Registration and a matching iD.
factory cut, had it in 15 days.
Zephyr, hope you’re well, I am having trouble obtaining a remote alarm key in the UK, tried 2 BMW dealers and they just aren’t interested in supplying! this is my key, is it the same as you have bought recently?
