Hi and welcome from me too near Lincoln. I had a Z3 first and really liked the car, but, it was a weekend toy my Z4 is an every day use car as its all I've have now. As said a more "modern" cruiser (only 3 years newer than my Z3).
I don't think I will go back to a Z3 but they're a great car to have fun in. Take your time finding the "right one" for you and enjoy it. :)

Tony.

Cheers folks - i have driven 3 or 4 Z4's a few years back and in the end bought a different marque but still was very impressed with the Z4. Ive also drove two Z3 2.2's around the same time so I have a feel for both of the cars.

My gut prob says Z3 if I'm honest mainly because of the retro looks but i also really rate the Z4's looks (esp the FL) & driving capabilities too

Oh im so conflicted LOL

Im going to view a few tomorrow and report back

Hi and welcome from London, well Brittany today , 6hr drive yesterday in a pre facelift 2.8 z3 roof down all the way. Only down side is my nose is very red today !! Never driven a z4 but do like the muscular lines but also love the retro and fat rear end of the early 2.8 z3. Also z3 is much more simple on the electronic front to work on. All great cars though.

So I've viewed one of the Z3's - the steering was a little vague (which i think is just how they are) but nice and tight feeling, no noticeable knocks or creaks.
Engine was smooth if a little 'ticketty' at the top end (Vanos on the way?), the exhaust note sounded good,if a little loud, slight binding on the o/s r brakes.
Overall a nice car but i need to view / test others i think

Hi Folks
A further update, I've been to see another Z today, its wing mirror mounts were badly corroded, headlights both cloudy, are these easy fixes?

Also what sort of noise from the rear diff would be considered normal...during the test drive i could hear a very slight whining noise (roof was down) is that par for the course on a Z3 or is that indicative of an issue ?

Depends how happy you are with the tools required really. But I would say yes. It certainly wouldn't put me off an otherwise nice car. But does seem to suggest the owner hasn't maintained all aspects of it?

Don't dismiss a M44 Z3 out of hand (1.9), they have many merits. My other car also has many merits. Am fortunate to have both ends of the scale and am long term Z3 man, 20 years since my first. Much depends on you budget and how you will use the car. If you can state this, we might be able to offer you a more objective, informed opinion, if that might help.:)

Drive as many as you can of both models so you have a really good idea of which suits your needs. I really don't know too much about the Z4 so wont comment there's plenty of owners here that have / can advise on Z4s,

Z3 though, don't get too hung up on engine size or mileage. Try to find a car that has been owned for a fairly long period by an enthusiast, we tend to spend the time and money (or try) keeping the cars in as best condition as possible. Avoid the seller that has bought a car for one summer or two of fun and now selling, it will likely have been driven hard and had no maintenance unless its obviously a good car that has been loved by a previous owner, though in reality it will probably have been the cheapest one they could find for their needs.

A car that has had suspension / bush work done would be higher on my list. Condition and past maintenance is King, much more important than mileage, age etc. If you like lots of torque then consider a 2.8 they are a great engine, or if you can find one and have reasonably deep pockets a 3.0. The 2.2 is possibly the best all rounder with just a little less BHP than a 2.8 and a reduction in torque (not much I don't think though) and for some reason probably the best exhaust note of them all. (oops that comment could start a row).

Never driven a 2.0 or 1.9 but owners on here rave about the better handling and I've chased a few, they are quick enough for most peoples needs, lets be honest we all spend most of our time tootling around at 50 with the roof down enjoying the scenery do we not?

Unless of course you want a running MOT'd project car and want to spend a year or so fixing it up, in that case the worlds your oyster, tonnes of good cheap fixers out there.

Good luck with the search.

As above

Defo buy on condition not mileage. Mine was low miles at 80k when i bought it but i have replaced the entirety of the suspension since!

i'm a massive fan of the prefacelift Z3 and i would touch anything that wasn't a 6 cylinder as they are so reasonably priced there is no need for the smaller engines.

cloudy headlights
diff whine
understeer

these are all traits of a standard car and nothing to be worried about

one thing to note is that @Lee is currently prepping a stunning Z3 for sale and he's only based in Basingstoke so might be worth teeing that up?
