After reading all the post on here an reading @t-tony thread about emissions I'm as an mot tester now curious as well . So my question on the subject is .
Is this a problem that possibly only affects 6cyl or is this a potential problem across the range

Thing is Steve, Grumpy has this issue with his 2.8 6 Cyl and Jason is saying it's a common problem with Z's. His is a 4 pot.. That's why I'm interested in getting some more data to be honest. I do think it's likely a testing problem more than the cars themselves.

Tony.

My gut feel is that 4 pots are more prone to this but saying that the air inlet ducting on all our cars is getting to the point where it degrades and lets in unmetered air etc. this will cause issues with emissions.

I have just changed the rubber thingy that back onto the air filter as it had a split on it. If this had been split a long time but worsened to the point of me noticing could that have been causing the problem?

Called in and spoke to main man this morning, Only just failed Emissions plus ball joint failure part of wishbone so cheaper to replace arm.
Just picked car up, Wishbone replaced £114 injector cleaner £10.20 and £50 for the MOT well pleased
May be imagining it but car seems quieter and smoother, could be the injectors after there cocktail.
Thanks for the support during this anxious time
Its hard been parent to a Z, but they always make you smile in the end

I'm a big believer in Forte petrol treatment, in fact all of their stuff. When I do an oil and filter change in the next few weeks I'll be using the engine flush before hand.

this would be the answer that makes the most sense, when cold my 4 pot really pen and inks of un-burned fuel, once its up to normal temp its fine, after looking through others results i have a vague recollection of it failing or rather close to failing on hc reading, before i swapped the cam sensor it failed on pretty much everything, another problem 4 pots suffer from which will have an effect is sticking valves but only when cold (this i think is the cause of the smell, exhaust valve staying open).
the other possible area is in my advisory's it has stated small leak of exhaust gasses but not excessive. its not just a zed problem, if you look on any of the bimmer forums there seems to be a theme with emissions. And yes it does appear to be the older beemers like ours, particularly with the 318 (m44)

So does putting in the high performance shell fuel do anything to clean as claimed?
