So, slight problem, I need a new engine for my 2000 BMW Z3, it currently has a 1.9 8v in, and I have someone to do the engine swap, I just need an engine - however, if possible I would like to get a 1.9 16v, does anyone know if this will require extra parts/ work, or can it be just a straight swap from an m43 to a m44?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

The M44 has 20 odd more horses than the single cam; makes a big difference you know.

The person who had it before me had a overheating problem, and long story short, needs a new gasket aswell as might have a crack. It was cheaper to buy a newer lower mileage engine and get it swapped. However, was wondering if I would have to buy different parts like manifolds if I were to swap it with a M44 engine as am on a budget.

Sad that your 'original' donk is poorly. Can't help with the info you need but there are others who will. I think you will like M44, especially if you get a nice tight one that sings.

I wonder if Rover had a hand in the development of these M43/44 engines and gave them their innovative chocolate head gasket

@Ben_W i have done this coversion, however it is in prototype stage at the moment and not yet passed an MOT.

It does work though and works quite well.
You need the M44 engine,
Coil pack with leads,
Manifolds,
Exhaust,
Clutch and flywheel,
Cover plate between box and bloc,
Rubber intake pipe,
Throttle cable and linkages,
Plumbing from from the donor car.
I didn't think I'd need the throttle cable etc but you definitely do.

Now from your M43 you will need
Starter,
Alternator,
Air flow meter,
All the sensors as you will need to swap them as they have different connectors. Sump as the later m43s have an oil level sensor in there.
Ping sensors,

2 wires need extending and the cam position sensor needs modification.
You can't use the hall effect sensor that comes on the M44 but the one from the M43 is too long. What you need to do is pack out the sensor i think 7.5mm. I have it written down somewhere. It took alot of working out. For the test it was a bit of pipe but I'm having a proper adapter made now it works just for neatness.

You will also need to weld another lambda sensor boss on the exhaust too as later models have 2.

The only outstanding connection is the one that went to the thermostat on the M43.

I haven't connected the secondary air injection yet either as that will require parts from the Californian model. Parts are all on eBay and I'll get them if doesn't pass emmisions. The parts are in the car i just need a Californian exhaust manifold and a longer hose from the air pump.

Hope this helps

Don't waste your time on a knackered engine. They are cheap enough. I paid £120 off eBay. Got an engine, exhaust, flywheel, intake, exhaust manifold, alternator, coil pack, mounts, PAS pump and engine harness included.
Though i don't need the alternator and PAS pump and I'll eBay them.

Too bad you don't live in Jersey. All they look for now at inspection is to see if the check engine light is on. They plug in an OBDll reader just to see if you just erased any codes and to see if you took out the light bulb for the check engine light.....Boom...you're down the road with a new 2 year sticker..............Frankie
