Welcome Steve!
Looks like a great car and the soft top issue would be a good opportunity to get even a better price, but don't loose the car! It's your car!

Welcome to the forum Steve. Roof not a problem its going to be freezing for the next few weeks so plenty of time to get sorted before the sun makes an appearance. Saying that love going out with the top down, heater blowing and seats nice and toasty

Welcome! I replaced my microswitch for £1.46.
If you can get £200 off for the sake of that then go for it, onky takes and hour to sort.

Hi and welcome from me in Scotland.
I would have to agree with everyone else roof not working not a deal breaker z3 roof really simple compared to something like a merc slk vw eos or saab 9-3 if the rest of the car fits the bill try knock a bit off price and go for it:)

Hi everyone I'm Steve who with my partner Helen was hoping to buy a 1997 Z3 2.8 Roadster yesterday afternoon, it was going so well, just 68K from new in metallic silver, near perfect black leather interior, that sweet straight six as quiet as a church mouse, no rust anywhere, for a 19 year old car it was ticking all the boxes... till we were ready for the test drive & the electric roof refused to work so I drove it with the roof up & mechanically everything was perfect, if the roof had worked we would have had it then & there ( though the soft top ideally needs replacing soon as is original), is there any common faults with these roofs & could they be disengaged from the mechanism & used as a manual roof? Such a nice car & a good price, thanks Steve
Hi, @Perkio, and welcome to the forum from Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. I've just read through this thread and agree with all the others about you getting the car regardless of the top. I am driving a 1.9L '96 at the moment. My top is manual. However, I have been on the forum for quite a while and remember that at one time, a member was having trouble with the top not going down and it turned out to be a wire going from the brake lights to the top. Perhaps I might be wrong and don't remember this right, but it was my impression that when the brakes are applied, the brake lights go on and electrify a wire from the lights that go to the motor to tell it that the brake is on. If I do not remember this correctly, another forum member will correct me. Frankie

The deed is done, how could I not with all your support & encouragement! £3550 with fresh MOT tomorrow & the buyer will do what it needs to pass no quibble, he didn't need to as it still has current MOT till April '17, but gives us peace of mind http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201609308287066?make=BMW&postcode=sp110pz&body-type=Convertible&price-from=500&model=Z3&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly New&onesearchad=New&advertising-location=at_cars&price-to=7000&radius=1500&sort=distance&zero-to-60=TO_8&page=1

Just noticed a couple of you asked where we're located, Weyhill just outside Andover Hampshire, thanks everyone, Steve

THAT'S REALLY GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any one of us will tell you that you didn't make a mistake. Such low mileage!!!! And it's not just the car that you have. You have all the members of this forum happy for you. You're about to meet an entire group of people that have the same interests and get together to meet and always have such a good time. It's like another world here. It's so good to have you with us with your "new" car. The best of luck with it. Frankie

Excellent, looks like you have just got yourself a belter, good luck with it, the only downside is the summer is nearly over, I bought mine about this time last year, It was resprayed over xmas and I was driving it with the roof down in January and continued to do so all year, however its a lot nice when it 20+ degrees outside.
