It has to be pulled out from under the trim, it is very hard but it will come out. Just tuck it back when you are finished and refit the plastic plugs.

As @mwpe says it is very awkward due to restricted access but it is the only way to do them. But should only take around an hour each side thats roughly how long it took me when we had the Z3 and we replaced the springs for uprated version at the same time. But as @t-tony says well worth changing the top mounts at the same time
