Lots of people seem to have trouble with emissions.

I've never had a problem. Touch wood.

I just looked at my v5 and it doesn't show anything. Does that mean my car isn't tested? ie just the smoke test. Or is there some other generic limit? What's that?

I could ask my MOT guy but not due to see him for a while.

You can ask for a certificate of conformity from BMW that will give you the emission readings it left the factory with.

I was wondering about MOT emissions. What does the MOT tester do? I mean is there some MOT book showing levels for all cars makes and models or does he use the data from the v5?

You should get a the actual readings from the emission test from the MOT tester along with your certificate. If they are above min standard you pass otherwise you fail. The standard is dependent on the age of the vehicle (whether it has a CAT or not).. sure one of our resident ex MOT testers will be along to say what those limits are for a Zed.

I keep saying this, but a plant sprayer and some water works just as well as any of the Cleaner Sprays.
Seldom used cars are the worst for emissions, they don’t get up to temperature to burn the carbon off.
Rev it to 2500, spray water, the finer a mist the better, rev it when it bogs, repeat a dozen times. Water is a fabulous scouring agent when it turns to steam, takes all the carbon off the pistons, chamber and valves. Get the engine really hot afterwards as the exhaust will be full of condensation.

I don't have a problem with emissions. Just seems lots of other people do and I'm wondering if one day I'll have the same.

Waa just wondering where doea the MOT tester know what levels my car should be.

Does the government's website return a figure when you enter your reg - mine is 189 g/km?

All petrol vehicles fitted with cats from 92 on get whats called the BET test ( Basic Emissions Test) limits are as follows.
Co. 0.200 max
Hc 200 max
Lamba 0.97 - 1.03
If car passes that deemed all good.
If it fails that then it will get a full catalyst test this will be model and year specific the tester analyser will have a database with a lot of cars in it ( all zed models are in all of ours) .
If the specific make and model there is a set of default limits set down in the manual ( flow chart on emissions section of mot manual) to determine the limit for that year .
There is the odd exception but nothing sort of mainstream.
Based on testing a fair few petrol cars over the years if the engine cat and lambda in good condition it will pass the bet test with ease.

This is a set of figures from a single vanos 2.8 ( 97 single cat and lambda)
Was doing some brakes on it for an upcoming mot thought while had it would check emissions car wasn't fully warmed up when checked still passed no problem.
Edit.
Sorry in answer to original questions mot analyser will have a set of basic questions after reg input to determine the type of emissions ( eg petrol ,diesel cat ,non cat etc ) the machine will apply the limits and type based in this.
