My roof is leaking!

Does he leak like this @Grumpy

Mine leaks without fail every time it rains, it's not huge amounts but it's enough to wind me and any passenger in the car up. It used to be something I could deal with before as it only affected the side where the passenger sat so I'd be nice and dry but now it's affecting my side of the car. :(
Try putting the windows up before you close your door if you have had them down. If I just wind my windows up when the door is shut, my car does exactly this!

@PeteZ3 thanks mate, I'll try that. It's a weird one though as the leak only happens sometimes. Ive had occasions where it'll be p****** it down with rain but the roof won't let any water in and then other times when there's a lake on the passenger seat.

I went into my zed yesterday to find this

Whilst it's a little difficult to show on camera the entire panel where the roof latch is located was covered in condensation as well as the windshield. Never noticed anything like this before. No wonder the alarm was going off every minute.

Ah I had big problems with the water getting in my zed, I had to put some car window sealant where the roof joins and folds, I did a good job of it and you can hardly tell any modification has been done. Was a bit of a pain though. But its water tight now so all is well :)

I used to park my former Z outside on the street, sometimes under heavy rain, and it always stayed dry as long as I did these three things:

1. Adjust the window glass to press well against the roof rubber by acting on the bolt under the front section of the door (release, press glass/B pillar towards the car, tighten again)

2. reduce distance between softop and windshield by adjusting the two hooks of the softop catches (undo the nut, rotate the hook 360 one/two times, tight the nut back)

3. ALWAYS keep the roof rubbers well smeared with some vaseline grease (it does miracles)

Hope this helps. :)

PS: the current Z is not allowed to play outside when it's raining.

Vasaline and other petroleum jelly type products will cause rubber to deteriorate over time.
I have used Gummi Pflege Rubber restorer which is readily available from Amazon or eBay. Clean the rubber, apply and let it dry. It softens and bulks up the rubber seal. Of course adjusting the seals so they fit correctly must be done before applying the Gummi. In my case there were gaps between the roof seals. These will slide in the metal frame with a good bit of gentle encouragement.
As was said earlier door glass set angle can be adjusted, just be careful not to over compress any of the seals as this can just move the problem. Light but positive contact all the way round seems to be the best approach.
Adjustments plus application of gummi every 3 months or so have virtually eliminated leaks that were a problem on my car.

I feel like I should have created my own thread rather than nicking yours @Grumpy =)) Sorry about that mate.

No problem mate, happy to share!

The whole of my car was filled with condensation today and it didn't even rain last night. Certainly wasn't the roof that leaked, because I left it down, all night in fact  Thank god it didn't rain!

I did the same a few weeks ago, I normally garage the car but forgot all about it and left it over night with the roof down, I got lucky too.

Mine is normally garaged but the 2.0 is in there at the moment and my brother was in the way washing his car so I left mine on the driveway with the intention of moving it in front of the garage later on but I forgot.

I need to sort the roof out on the 2.8 though as the seals are not the best, what do people use to secure the repair patches to the seal? I've done them in the past but they never seem to stick that long. Also does anyone else have leaks further along the seals and not just at the front? I think mine have shrunk, haven't tried gummi pledge on them yet and I'm not to keen on paying £200 for new ones.

I also find the patches don't stick very long, picked up some black silicone adhesive from a hardware store to try. I guess all the gummin pfledge I've doused it in doesn't help with adhesion...

For the seals I spaced them outwards a hit so they meet the window better. There is a BMW TIS doc about it some where but it's dead easy:
Remove the seals from the frame
Unbolt the metal bits that hold the deal in place. Add a washer and refit. It doesn't need much, I think one washer was enough (the bolts aren't too long so you can't space it too much anyway.
Whilst the seals are off good chance to spray gummi all around and inside the deal.

I also always open and close the door when putting the window up with the hood closed - it seems to make a better deal than when the window winds up and pushes the seal up from the bottom (then the little gaps occur between the individual sections of seals).

I've never tried tilting the glass inwards via the door adjustment - should be a similar effect.

Thanks @ Dino D I've just had a new top put on my car and have a lot of wind whistle going on. Will try the gummi first and see what result I get! JIM

to be fair most soft tops of this age will leak in intense rain, mine is fine but occasionally during heavy rain I find splashes on the passenger seat, I get more trouble with leaks at the rear window.

On another note, mine doesn't see the rain and is a bit of a garage queen, however a couple of months back we had a mini meet with the Mints and the Bozzys in Derbyshire, well it rained and rained and then rained some more, on the way up both mine and the passenger side was leaking, not from the seals but through the roof, we got to our cottage and put the car in the barn to dry it off, the next day we all met up and went cruising in torrential rain and the roof never leaked once all day, I can only think that because the car had been kept dry for months the mowhair roof had dried and contracted but had swelled and sealed over night,
The cruise in the wet was great fun.

there is supposed to be a rubber membrane inside the mohair, I wonder if a replacement roof does not. some say -something fast twill or something like that, do these not have this membrane?

The membrane wouldn't help if the mohair was compramised as the water would find its way in somewhere, it was coming in just near the side windows but through the head lining.

mine does have wear at the point where the hinged part rubs the roof when lowered, I will keep an eye on it.

Yep, the experts say that you do not need to proof the roof because that is what it is made to do.
