Second Z3... first one owned for 12 months 5 years ago and was 1.9l...

Lots to be done on new Z3 but would rather be reactive than proactive on the repair... what do you think?

Bought a risky (no service history) 2.8l rather than nice 1.9l.

Gearbox is clunky but heard it's a common problem...

Current list is to be done:

Thermostat
Viscous Coupling Fan
Fan Shroud
Fan belt
Clunky gearbox
Also advised floor coming away from chassis

It's not worth much but clears mot...

How best to handle the situation?

Hello and welcome from Truro. Good luck with the project.
My car is currently laid up waiting for me to get my arse into gear to change the head gasket.

Fix the cooling system first. You don't want a cooked engine. Do a basic oil service and change plugs. Then look into gearbox. May improve with an oil change but if not a second hand box and fitting a new clutch at the same time may be needed . Once she is running properly sort the rust out. However it may be prudent to jack the car up at this stage and asses the rust before you spend money on the car

Welcome from Ireland! Address the issues as @raymond has suggested - tick them off one by one - and take your time throughout the process - it becomes an enjoyable hobby albeit one that keeps the hands in the pockets looking for that extra cash from time to time - good luck!

Looks like a common list at issues that are associated with old Z's David. As said a hobby like these does hammer the pocket sometimes but the smiles per mile will repay you and some. Enjoy the journey!

Tony.

ps. Where are you located?

Hi from Mansfield from a 2.8 owner. The gearbox noise could well be a clucking diff. They are common, obviously when you change gear and dip the clutch the diff knocks. Check the round bush in the middle of the diff hanger, smack in the middle as you look from behind.
When you say about floor detaching do you mean the boot floor? Lift the carpet and look at the spot welds that run along the boot floor. These support the diff and can break. If your changing the cooling system do the lot while it's stripped out. Viscous coupling, fan, pulleys, adjuster and belts. Good look and let's see some pics!

The car doesn't overheat so I will hold on cooling.. and the car starts ok so will hold on the oil and plugs... the car clearly was parked up for sometime and a fair bit of rust but a local mechanic said there is a special chemical for underbelly for rust... will keep you posted...

You. Are spot on regarding the bush in the middle... just identified it yesterday... any idea how much parts and labour should be?

Will check spot welds and update pics...

With cooling system will address at the first sign of overheating
