You will have to be slightly cautious the 1st few times you fold it till the centre gets used to curving to the right shape.
As for the protection this is the official item for the purpose

but a lot of members use towels some use the lagging as well.
As for keeping it clean on top of soap and water this is really good ( great for headlight too )

Hmmm. I have always got out of the car with the hood partly folded to make sure the window is curving inwards smoothly, and I have also placed a soft towel in the fold before allowing it to go right down. I have still got a distinct line across the window. It's a pest.

The problem with putting a towel or similar in the crease is that it is quite possible to raise the hood (mine is powered so is done without getting out of the car) forgetting the towel is there and drive off, leaving it behind. How do I know this?

Thank you for the info. That is a lot of money for a towel!

How long have you been doing that? Do you still have the line across the screen?

The line is mainly caused by the 3rd roof spar rubbing the roof material on in when folded

OK, but is there anything can be done to prevent it Steve? To me it is a design fault that goes back to the drawing office at BMW.

I have a powered hood, and use a bath towel over the rear part of the roof covering the third roof spar, I get out when the roof is halfway down to check the window is folding correctly. Then complete the folding action.

This might seem strange but I've yet to see my hood The car had it's hard top on when I bought it and it's rained when ever I've had chance to take it off. I do have a receipt for a replacement hood the previous owner brought. So this is all good info for me. As an aside I had a TF a while ago and the window zipped out to prevent damage with the top down.

Never fancied a hardtop. I like the hood down too much.
If you drive your Z all year round and you cant garage it in the winter, a hardtop is a godsend.
Plus, your soft top survives another year longer.... ;)

Made ours with some fleece and it's held in place with length of elastic and modified pipe clip and each side which hook onto the roof support frames before we drop it. Still have to check it folds properly especially if its hot. The clips usually stay in place so doesn't fly off when putting it on in the wind.

edit just found a pic.

Even the humble MX5 had that. TBH for a company such as BMW it's p155 poor design I think.

If someone started making a replacement roof where the window zipped out and laid flat, like the MX 5 they would sell shed loads of 'em. Business opportunity someone ??

Tony.

Definitely in my opinion a forced comprise on the design.
Don't know about stopping the line appearing certainly ways to limit it the
Plast rx listed above does a great job of disguising the scratch line and is really good when window starts to go opaque.
