16 year old Daughter often hears me tapping away on my computer so yesterday she asked what I'm doing, who I'm talking to, and why so much?

First thoughts were, pot calling kettle black, as most youngsters seem unable to go about their daily life without staring into their smart phone.
( A battle I ain't going to win with them )

So apart from the obvious answer of sharing knowledge about cars I put it another way.

"It's like sitting in the pub talking with a load of fellow car friends but without the cost of beer"

She just accepted that and wandered off.

Anyone else been quizzed by their family?

Yes, and my usual reply is “it’s like Facebook but with less pictures of peoples dinner or their kids in school uniform”

Yup. 'Sad old man talking to virtual people about rubbish old man cars'. I love my offspring but I couldn't eat a whole one!

Yes, I used to be questioned all the time when I first joined the forum, but not so much now. Once I explained that it wasn't just cyber chat, but actual people, with actual cars, who met up and drove them together in a social group, it was deemed ok. This is a great place to share information and learn knowledge and meet new friends. Long live Zroadster.org.

Historically, a forum is an evolution from a "bulletin board system" (or BBS) when the number of people who could connect was determined by how many phone lines you had connected to the server. When I started at a company back in '91 we had a BBS which had 8 incoming phone lines, each with a separate modem connected to the server - which incidentally sat on a desk in the corner of the office. Customers could dial in and grab all sorts of support information from it, and converse with other customers and support staff.

This is how Zorg could have looked in the 80's... Looks a bit like the old Ceefax system on TV's. At the time it was quite impressive... :D

The initial reaction from family is that it’s another “sad Dad” activity, but giving examples of the boundless helpful and practical advice turns that into respect - “oh fair enough Dad”!

I had an excellent response to this thread that @hard top would have found hilarious and @GazHyde would have banned me for :D:D so I'll keep quiet;);)

It's the modern equivalent of driving to the pub, drinking lots of beer and smoking fags, putting the world to right and driving home, hopefully without crashing too often.

Indeed it is, I think we are all in violent agreement that Cosmos Black pre facelift 2.8 Z3 is best :D

Is that considered a virtual crash? =))

Great analogy Ian, just a good place to spend some time talking to your mates:thumbsup:

How time passes, interesting to look back at the tech of the day and just how old hat it looks now, remember Ceefax well, great at the time.

I think we can start an argument here...is it just the half hour or the full hour? As we all know you can't go wrong with a blue Zed:whistle:

Ha, great to hear the word modem again Gaz. I used to be a data comms engineer back in the day (late 70s/early 80s), maintaining the modems and lines to all sorts of customers. Good times:thumbsup:

I found myself trying to explain the forum to one of my customers the other day after I said we were all meeting up in the New Forest at the weekend.
He was having difficulty understanding "car enthusiasts " as well might be something to do with him liking something called football whatever that is.:whistle:

"Football" Had to google that one Gary.

In actual fact it doesn't matter what colour it is, as long as it's a Z4

Tony.
