My daughter asks why forums?

Tony.

Yes I've been asked what I do on my iPad :p
I say .......
It's my Z friends ;)

I love my computer. All my friends live in there! ;)

Talking of modems - In the late nineties when the internet was dial up using modems and long before ADSL, I had the main ISPs as my accounts. I was installing phone lines for AOL, Demon Internet, UUNET Pipex and others. I bet a few recall those names. I had the likes of Cliff Stanford and other key players on speed-dial. At times we were installing them at a tremendous rate - at times of tens of thousands of lines a month or more.
The rate of growth was so huge I hijacked not one but two new exchanges that were planned to be used for other services to cope with demand. It was big business and I was at the centre of the whirlwind of this new fangled www thing.
Happy days!

Historically, a forum is an evolution from a "bulletin board system" (or BBS) when the number of people who could connect was determined by how many phone lines you had connected to the server. When I started at a company back in '91 we had a BBS which had 8 incoming phone lines, each with a separate modem connected to the server - which incidentally sat on a desk in the corner of the office. Customers could dial in and grab all sorts of support information from it, and converse with other customers and support staff.

This is how Zorg could have looked in the 80's... Looks a bit like the old Ceefax system on TV's. At the time it was quite impressive... :D

"wildcat" i seem to remember was the software

remember this hosted many of these using software cant remember the names now..... used to dial up to newport and lines were alway engaged...

I had a funny conversation with a friend not long after we joined and started "cruising"
Said we were going to Wales for a cruise and the response was "whereabouts in Wales do cruise ships go from"
So I explained what we do, "cruise around in our cars" which actually sounds really bad especially if you take into account the general age group of the forum members
Need to have a different title for what we do before we all get arrested =))
