Please don't think I'm preaching here, I'm not, I'm just hoping to clear up some misconceptions the general public have towards, what is a very important practice of keeping us all safe on the roads.:)
Reading what you typed before, it seems that the MOT is quit basic.

you are right but i have already said that a fail is a fail, never once asked him to pass it, so never put him a position of losing his job, going back to the start i had the car booked in but the near side washer was weak, all ok on sunday and know have found it to be a failed 1 way valve, all i said when i got there was it was not worth leaving as i knew it would fail, the guy at the garage said if i left it the mot guy would have a look and sort it , but have a word with him first, this is what i did, his answer was if it dont it the windscreen it will fail, what he could have said is turn the one jet on the drivers side to hit the near side screen leave the other jet on the drivers side and it will pass, that is what the guy at the garage poss meant , i have no issues with any garage or expect a car to pass that should not but as every think in life there are those who are willing to help and as i said job's worth why do i take it back there, as i said it is right by were i work drop of walk to work, 5 mins, but to be fair the next garage is 15 mins away but a lot more friendly so there it will go

It really is Mike but it's amazing that many people take it like an us and them yearly battle to be overcome, where it's really in everyone's best interests.

Hi phil, just responding to "seems crazy" and you're absolutely right some of the M.o.t. is just that and some testers don't communicate very well either. Hope you have a better relationship with the other garage mate.:)

.......IF a tester is caught passing a vehicle which doesn't meet the test criteria by the DVSA he/she can incur penalty points which can ultimately lead to disqualification from testing and maybe lead to losing their job. ...........
Knew somebody this happened to - small local village set-up - let a car through on the understanding the fault would be rectified. Driver didn't, got stopped and promptly dropped tester in it - tester lost his job.
Remind me @t-tony what do you do for a living?;)

My Z failed the MOT a few months back on emissions, the tester then added some fuel additive and passed it on a retest straight away. Not sure why he had to fail it first though :(

Ash
Ash,the reason the tester had to fail your car on the first emission test is simply because the gas analyser said it didn't pass the test,... and that result is logged on the database of the analyser. So it is officially failed the test for that reason. Wether he/she applies some additive or makes an adjustment or whatever else to make it pass it HAS to be retested so that the analyser will then log it as passed in the database. Also this is where the DVSA gets their data ie say 45% of cars fail the emission test at the first attempt, or whatever, or 36% fail on lighting faults including headlight alignment as BMG said earlier. Hope this helps you understand why he did what he did mate.:)

According to the gov (www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/retests) if you take the car away and return by the end of the following working day there is no fee, but that only applies to certain failures as listed on that link, otherwise they can charge a partial retest fee.

@t-tony thanks for clearing up the situation re the emissions, I didn't consider that the emissions tests are logged or fed back in any way so it makes sense now - still feels upsetting to fail though :)

cheers

Ash
