Talking to someone the other day and tyres came up in the conversation. So perhaps our MOT experts , Tony & Steve et al, can answer this question. Do both tyres on the same axle have to have the same speed rating? So say it's two same make , same tyre exactly , but one is a 'V' and the other a 'Y' rating, does that pass or fail?

Whilst we wait for the experts take a look here
Looks to me that as long as the speed rating covers the same speed range they would be acceptable, I await the expert views.

I am not an expert but when I bought my car it was fitted with a mix of cheap and nasty used rubber. Didn't look at the speed rating but everything else was different. Let alone brands one was a run flat and the other not. It has passed its Mot with no issues since both were legal. Had the car a week before it was fitted with new rubber all around.

Yes @colb, I've looked at the official information, just wondered how 'testers' saw it. Looks like it's legal, but not advised. Personally I would always want exactly the same spec tyre at both ends of the axle. I've been to look at cars like that @Delk and when they are at a garage I always point out that it's not exactly a good selling point!

I was quite surprised that they allow run flat and normal to be placed onthe same axle, wouldn't want that personally.

I got the car from a someone at work knowing a good amount of history. The car was garage kept and he put less then 1000 miles on it a year. It failed an Mot on worn rears so he fitted some cheap used ones. Not what I would have done and this was on my list of repairs even before I had my hands on the car.

Speed rating not a reason for rejection, but, no doubt some will advise it simply as a CYA action. Re run flat and none runflat on same axle, if they’re the same size they’re ok Test wise.

Tony.

I don't think they care in the UK as long as the tread is OK.

Different story in Germany - or, at least it used to be when I was 'of an age' where I was always wanting to 'Mod' me car.

In Germany there's a kind of "Mini" logbook which you should have with you when driving. It fits in your wallet but folds out to show quite a few details including the width, size and speed rating of the tyres at the time of manufacture. ANY discrepancy from what's written in yer vehicle paperwork is instant grounds for the NeeNaa's to pull you over and give you a ticket. One time, on my Matra, I wanted to go up a size on the tyres. This was allowed but only because the manufacturer had tested that make/model with that size tyres it but I still had to take my car to the TUV testing station where the tester spun it round in the car park at silly speeds trying to make the tyres rub on the body. Then my vehicle docs were updated to include the new size.

Uk speed and load are not class 4 testable.
Main thing you fail tyres on is either condition or tread depth.
Stephen.
