ok, my zed failed on a horn not working, fuse under hood is ok, but thinking about this i have recently noticed a slight scraping sound when i turn the steering wheel, to me it suggests a knackered slip-ring, any ideas?

I had to replace the horn on mine once. I just got a replacement from Halfords for a few £.

That ring on the steering gets dry, common thing on a lot of zeds. I removed the steering wheel to get access and sprayed some PTFE grease. Worked a treat.

if it were the clock spring would it not also effect the airbag? i dont have an airbag light on.

Nope the air bag is separate. You actually remove the air bag from the steering wheel.

i have now tried swapping the relay with the fuel pump relay and still is a no go, is there anywhere i can bridge to test the horn circuit? or test the clock spring - does the clock spring go straight back to the horn relay? according to diagrams is does.

suppose i could always remove the relay casing and push the contact closed and see if it fires the horn. dont fancy bridging the relay as there is a fair amount of current there.

Hope you get your horn fixed @littlefeller :p
should be straight forward fix, it also failed on a cracked windscreen and emissions, the screen will be down to the insurance to fix and the emissions errr well i think its down to a faulty thermostat, so a good thrashing before retest should fix it, or cheat and restrict the water flow for the test.

How do you know its not the horn itself?

My steering wheel makes a noise so I'll have to give this a try Lee.

I don't, but if I close the circuit on the relay and it doesn't sound then the horn will be the next port of call. the current that powers the horn doesn't go through the horn switch, there two different circuits so I need to figure which one has the problem, if the horn sounds with the relay closed then it can only be the horn switch side.

Yes your zed should have dual tone horns 1high 1low chances are they both have not failed at the same time so fault more than likely to lie elsewhere

This MoT failure thing seems to be catching
Hope you find and fix the problem quickly Jason.
I'd notice pretty quickly if my horn wasn't working :ymdevil:

I would say the horn failure is due to lack of use and corrosion, which show Zedders are too wise to get in a situation which requires the use of a horn!
So , from time to time, when the Zed is in the closed garage, feel free to push the horn like in the '50s, for at least 30 seconds...;)
And by the way, did you noticed the tone of the Z3 horn is more Italian than German?

Makes complete sense but for a 5 min check I would stick a 12v supply on the horn and see if you develop tinnitus :D

I've got a spare SRS steering wheel which has a working horn, it's from the e36 that we had.

The horn on our e36 stopped working about 12 years ago and what was done is something was soldered back together, I was too young to remember any of this so I can't tell you what was causing the issue. Since the car is scrapped i took the wheel, air bag and slip ring out.

If you want the wheel with the airbag - wheel isn't in great condition but it works I can get it over to you for £15 inc p&p.
