Does that mean it's insured by them if it goes wrong :D
No mate ,it doesn't but if they're in any doubt they should ask the presenter of the vehicle before carrying out the oil temp. check. Having said that any car in good working order should be able to endure that pre conditioning anyway. How do you guys go on at a rolling road day, do you have to sign a disclaimer or give vocal consent to put your car through that?

@Scooblitz I wouldn't consider scrapping based on a list like that.

Springs, as the others have said isn't a huge job and neither are the brake pipes. £500 labour sounds like main dealer prices and to be honest, as cars get 15-20 years old, main dealers are the last place you want to be!

Emissions, my 2.8 went through its MOT last weekend. She wasn't hot when the emissions test was started as we'd shut her down during the visual part of the test for some other work to be done while on the ramp. It took a good 10-15 minutes and some reving to get the cat proper hot, only then did the numbers go green on the screen. But, the temp gauge was up to normal long before the emissions came down.

As for the air bag, can't help on that as I've never had to look at one.

If KwikFit had MOT'd mine I'm sure she would have failed on emissions as I doubt their testers have the time to wait for cats to get hot. But what you don't know is how hot the engine is if you bypass the oil temp! @t-tony is right to be "boiling" as the engine may not have been!

Good luck and don't give up on it!
Generally speaking on older cars most airbag faults centre around the wiring and connections under the seats and are quite easily remedied. You can buy a re set tool off eBay for around £15.

I removed my rear exhaust box and replaced it with a straight through pipe, it was leaking slightly at the join. It failed the emissions test and the MOT tester said it was probably the leaking joint. Refixed the joint and it flew through the emissions test. Sometimes it can be a simple cure, it's finding the simple cure that is the tricky bit.

The leaking joint would've caused it to fail on Lambda not CO. Totally different fixes needed in those cases.

Thanks for all the replies so far Zorgs

There are lots of possibles when it comes to emissions. It points to engine or exhaust issues most likely. The list of possibles are endless and quite expensive too if i get it wrong. I have ordered a little code reader to check out a few bits and pieces and see if i can narrow down some possibilities. Help from the forum will always be welcomed.

To my way of thinking - parts should be cheap enough. I may have some decent springs.

The driver airbag might be a defective slip ring on the steering wheel?

Labour though is the issue. Do it yourself or with help from the Zed Shed and you'll be fine. Pay a garage and depending on your mileage and attachment to the car it could be a killer.

Tonights update is that there is no update as i've bought the wrong ODB reader. I got a 16 pin when my car only has the 20 pin connector under the bonnet in the 98 m44. :banghead:

Thanks for the reply. Spotted that i can get an adapter. It seems that the 20 pin units themselves have more parameters that the 16 pin and i imagine that might be what i need. I doubt an adapter would give me the 20 pin functionality either.

i use mine with the torque app for live engine monitoring of sensors... the 20 pin connector underbonnet also gives you access to other stuff too like the service reset and oil reset light, and abs pump, and inpa... i not used the other things on the port though

Progress has been made. Nipped the car over only 1.5 miles to @stevo7682s mums house who has kindly let me store my car on her drive for a week. Stevo has been so kind to offer his services to repair the car and managed to get the front springs in place.

Aside from the disapointing increased ride height of the front, it was much better than running a car that had the spring sheared off in the middle and collapsed inside. To think i was hooning around the A82 last month. Stevo manhandled the springs into place with myself assisting in the occasional bolt fastening and jimmying the control arms with the prying tool. Took it round the block and the difference is huge. Feels nice and reactive as it should.

Next weekend for brake pipes and lambda sensor then a midweek MOT in a fortnights time and she will be back on the road and hopefully in time to get out in this lovely weather up here in scotland.

When the cars back on the road i think ill treat it to a full hood clean and restore and maybe get some new badges. Then enjoy a good summers driving.
