Blimey, how have they passed in previous years? I have never seen any reach that stage...That is not just 12 months worth of corrosion.
They are a common fault on bmw E36's too, so I would have thought they should be a known check by most MOT testers.
Still, its nice to see new ones that will last for years more.
I bet he struggled to separate those joints.
and that shock absorber too...... tut tut

Had mine serviced a few weeks ago and they found and cleaned up corrosion on brake pipes. Said it's a common problem on BMWs, more so than other makes. Not sure if that's true and if so,why?
I'm afraid it is bmw brake pipe were rubbish 20 yr ago and still are now .
I regularly see relatively new ( 5 -6 yr old ) bmw and mini with brake pipe as bad looking as Stacey's ones dont know if its the metal they are made of or the way they are protected but either way they are not great

Gonna call you up on this one Tony.
That is not a preservative its just to make connection make up smooth due to the copper compound.
Used buckets of the stuff in the oil & gas biz....
What I meant was it keeps the water and salt off and so preserves the pipes Mike, so in that sense, to me, it is a preservative coating.;) We use it in the motor trade as an anti-seize compound, for such as brake pads etc.

Tony.

Another years motoring ! Suggest you now remove all the inner arch covers and remove all the mud. Then wire brush everything and then a coat of aquasteel to turn all the crusty metal metal a nice black colour.
That's a job for @Mnbrennan and the Zedshed team (I hope)

Plus, if the under side of the car gets wet, it is going to come off, so where is the protection there?
God, I hate the stuff, used to get covered in it.

The ar*se end of a Z3 is the only part I've never really done any work on so don't know my way around here. When my brother's 1.9 had new brake pipes I guess 8-10 years ago the mechanic said the job would be much cheaper if he left the rotted pipes in and re-routed the new pipes. Does that make any sense? Blimey that was on an 8-10 year old car, never mind the age they are now.

I hate to see rotten old pipes left in situ, might make it cheaper but just laziness if you ask me. Where do you clip the new pipes if old ones are still in the clips? I always bend the new pipes against the old ones to make them fit, anyway, you can't do that if you don't take them off.

The stuff we use doesn't come off Mike, I guess it's different to what you were using mate. It does attract dust as you say but that just builds up a protective layer, much like dried mud does.

I didn't like it at the time but I was into the Z3s then to do much about it. I keep meaning to have a look at it to see how ugly it is (he still has it - from new) but I'm always working on my own projects.

Mine were in a similar state a couple of years ago when I first got the car.

It had advisories for 3 or 4 years about corroded brake lines but it should have definitely failed with the state they were in when I bought the car.

Doesn't sound like the type of mechanic I would let loose on my car. :(

In fairness to him he offered my brother it as an option when said he was skint. He put on a new radiator at the same time and used a Nissen which isn't too shoddy, it might certainly have been something more cheap and cheerful.
