I took my Z3 2.8 auto preface lift for its mot today and it failed only on the windscreen washer not working turned out the mot man had dislodged it by accident so was a quick fix.He also said the emissions was high but he cleaned my oil fill cap and they came down I have ordered a new one and will flush and change oil + filter.
Unfortunately I had a couple of advisory all 4 Coil spring are corroded was the main one
brake pipe rear has signs of corrosion or covered in grease
Service brake fluctuating but not excessive of side front
One of the tryes was getting low but I am going to change all 4 not decided what make yet the ones on are 225 r17 94w events depends on how much I spend on the other jobs hoping g to keep it under a grand considering trump as wiped £17k of my retirement found this week
I am going to change the shocks at the same time as the springs and was wondering would anyone know a decent make of shook and springs ?
I am looking at mid range

Priority should be brake pipes and calipers checked for binding. As to spring corrosion just how bad are they, if just surface rust that's not a problem if they are rust potted then replacement would be an option. Could be the garage was looking for work from what you described. Replacements really down to your budget lots of options on Autodoc from loads of Brands.
I find it hard to believe cleaning the oil filler cap would bring emissions down, take that explanation with a large dose of salt!!

I wondered about that too. But wondered if the crankcase ventilation, breather etc. Is completely blocked then the high pressure (blowby gasses) in the crankcase might force oil into the combustion chamber which burns causing excessive smoke and high emmisions. Undoing the filler cap releases that pressure - while the cap is off - maybe long enough to sneak through the emissions test

Er. .

Or somenthing like that. 🤷‍♂️

Rear brake pipes are a pain as rear sub frame should be dropped to to sort them

I always use a MOT garage that only does tests they don't do repairs and the testers are all car enthusiasts and give a fair test. Changed to them after I got stung by the previous garage I used had a new manager and stung me for a headlight bulb which I knew was working when I dropped the car off. Stung me for an hour's labour fitting it. They lost 5 cars I used to have tested there so he shot himself in the foot.

I always use my local authority testing station (Newcastle) for the same reasons

The testers are similarly time-served enthusiasts and seem genuinely pleased to see me every year. Probably cos vast majority of their work is dealing with surly taxi drivers who hate them haha

I can recommend Monroe shocks, quite cheap but very good quality. If your springs have only some surface corrosion you could have them powdercoated. Otherwise Lesjöfors offers good value for the money.

Or ask one of our breakers, e.g. @spurs fan in a coupe , they will most likely have some springs in stock.

I have used this MOT station for years .It is run by a man and his a wife they don't do repairs and you have to book a month in advance as he has a good reputation for being strict but fair.
