We are in Belgium at the moment and I have found the condition of the roads in general to be worse than the UK. Saw this sign, which I believe could catch on with the councils at home. Once they have warned you, they are not responsible!

Better off with square wheels over here - some roads are very dangerous. Then when they repair potholes humps are left on the roads.

Car technology is progressing at a decent rate - road structure and maintenance is not improving at all.

They seem to be committing fraud charging for road provision and spending it elsewhere i. e you're not getting what you pay for.

That's why it's not called road tax anymore Adrian. I think it's called vehicle licence tax now or something similar. The motorist is nothing more than a cash cow

There hasn't been a road tax since the late 1930's - vehicle excise duty now. Doesn't actually go towards the roads either, straight to the Treasury and distributed from there.

Motorists will always be cash cows, same as smokers, drinkers etc. I hate paying too, but realise the government needs to raise revenue some how, until they come up with other ideas it will continue.
I don't think though there should have been zero and token vehicle duty for some vehicles, better to spread the pain more evenly :)
