More Bad Luck

Hi all.
As title I just can't believe my luck with this Z3 I was driving in the Stevenage area yesterday when all of a sudden loud banging ratterling Squealing almost total power loss nearly causing accidents car would not pull away would only do 25 mph foot on the floor making a horrendous noise what can it be now as lots of you have read my problems already.Spending a small fortune up to now on this car and not getting results.
Anyway I knew there is a BMW indy in the area limped there just nearly stalling making terrible noises.
They put it on the ramp and it's blown the cat to bits inside thus blocking the system hence no power it's ratterling like a good un when tapped .
It has got an aftermarket Cat that was fitted before my ownership obviously crap as it looks like new on the outside .I just can't believe this car it needs stuff doing to it now this it's becoming a money pit as most of the jobs we can't do.
The guys at the indy were ever so nice they are trying to get me a second geniune cat without much luck so the only alternative is to have another aftermarket Cat and keep fingers crossed.
So it's now stuck broken down at there workshop.
One of the guys lived near me and gave me a lift home.
It's booked in for an MOT Tuesday now that's the least of my worries .
Not sure where it will end probably only after I sell it maybe.
It's going to cost me a fortune again all other stuff will have to wait garaged bills are not cheap.

You can get a cat for £100 off eBay. Won't last forever but keep you going for now.

If only you knew how much I've spent but just look at the fun that comes with the ownership of a Z3 :)

Sorry to hear you've had a run of bad luck... I suppose lots of us have bought cars that need stuff doing and I guess some are titering on the edge of a breakdown... they are closing in on classic status and bits just wear out. ... I think low Rider is right... They are fun and I feel OK about my car not being perfect as it's a long term commitment... Hope you can hang in there with your zed.

I think you need to be a mechanic or very capable DIY mechanical person to own a classic or it works out very expensive at the garage.
If it's an M it's worth spending but on a car that's not as valuable you can end up spending more than the cars worth.
Just need a Zed shed in Hertfordshire to help us out a bit. :thumbsup:
 
When I start reading your post I said: "My God, banging rateling engine, it's a total damage!" When I found out is the cat I said:"pfew, it's just the cat!".
You don't have to be upset when it's about wear on old parts! You paid little money for the car that as new was 25k. The money that we spend renewing the parts affected by normal wear are much less and at the end you enjoy a great car (already officially historical vehicle in Italy). You don't have to be mechanic, just to love and trust him. Be patient and the Zed will give you back!

I have really tried and spent money on it but it's let me down a hell of a lot.
Even with what I have done the garage inspected it and I have a long list of stuff that needs doing on top of everything else.

Don't believe all garages, Even if they are nice to your face.
These cars are so easy to work on though even for a complete novice and their is always lots of help on here.
Don't give up..
Where's the nearest Zedshed to you.May be worth making a trip for you.
 
Mines giving me a headache of late. You have to get on with it or move on. My car owes me quite a bit more than It's worth but that is what happens with enthusiast owned vehicles. There is stuff mine needs now but has to wait till I can afford it. It needs, new suspension all round, rear discs and pads, there's something amiss with the emissons, possibly co2 sensor, my boot won't stay shut when it's being driven. All these things will be done as and when I can afford them. I'm a lorry driver, I do not have money to throw about, but all that said I would never give up on my zed. It gives me so much pleasure. I love to drive it on a sunny day and the biggest thing of all are the friends I have met through the forum. The zed shed guys, North and south are all volunteers who give there time up to help others on the forum not so mechanically minded as themselves. I know I can ask on here and the same handful of guys, and not all Zed shed fellows answer my questions for me. My advice Tracey would be to do it as you can afford it. Speak to the guys that can, and do a bit at a time. All these issues are general wear and tear and happen to all cars at some point. Don't give up hope. You sell it, you'll regret it. ;)

Sorry to hear the car's problems have escalated. I thought the engine had gone when I read your first thread. That would have been a disaster - but things are not as bad after all. What are the list of things the garage said that needed doing if you don't mind me asking?

They are all a headache, Give em some painkillers and alls good again for a while.
Old cars have problems, Just that you are having a few at the same time.

Went for a drive in mine this afternoon, only sixty or so so miles, Fanbloomingtastic.

Come back home and all is good in the world.

Couldn't get that feeling in my other cars.
 
My list after they serviced it today and fitted a new air breather valve .

New cat hopefully salvage the exhaust.
Discs all round badly corroded rears corroded fronts with lips
Brake fluid over due
Both front drop links gone bad
Rear axle beam bushes dropped.
Rear top mounts worn
Diff bush which I have bought polybush but needs fitting
Drive belt splits

This is after service and air breather valve to add New Cat and fit guessing bill will be 350 ish
I also have my constant battery drain plus tiny niggles here and there.

As you see in my progress thread I have done a lot this year and now I have this Cat service air valve to pay for my budget is blown for just ,12 months and I still have an MOT this week

For most of us on the forum our cars are "second" cars or "weekend" cars and as such we can wait to put things right, the problem intensifies though if the car is a daily driver.

You're not having much luck with that car, really feel for you.:(

Absolutely agree - plus our mileage is fairly low annually, and therefore wear and tear and costs are minimal - maybe I shouldn't have said that? I hope our trouble-free motoring continues!:arghh:
