OK so you may thank me later (or may not) but I have to say that the piece where the gear lever is needs to sit over the piece covering where the heater controls were. You will never 'fill' the gap, otherwise, IMO.
Also....make sure the 'handbrake' piece and the 'gear lever' piece are exactly lined up, or it will look terrible. There will always be a 'join' so it needs to look square. I used uneven, glued, packers underneath to make them sit level. I can't attach pictures anymore (for whatever reason) to show.

Thanks Pond, appreciated, i"ll take a look. It looks like you have a similar set up as me. I'm am though heavily modifying mine as I'm not going for a full replica look. Im looking to create a removable panel on that front upright panel with extra heating vents....and a few other things like phone charger socekts etc soni can get behind it in the future. I'm working it out. Im not 100% decided yet.

I also want some additions to the gearstick section like heated seat controls, central locking buttons, hazard buttons etc etc and adding some cup holders to the rear handbrake section from a mx5. But point taken on alignment.

Im also working on a popup sat natnav screen on the front dashboard if I can fit it in between the heater system. Just working on the module sections and electronics.

It's turning out to be a bit more of a project than I had planned but I have time and want it to be a drivers car for that trip around the alps i want to do with some mod cons in.

If I get half in of what I've got planned ill be happy lol.

You should get most things inside the GRP covers; they sit quite high on mine. I wish I could post pictures, as could show you how the gear lever section meets the heater matrix cover. Mine all comes apart in around 5 minutes.
I have switches in the 'ashtray'.
Be careful where you put the hazard switch. I think there are regs as to where these have to go; ie somewhere easily accessible and easy to see. Not 100% sure though.

I did have to raise the handbrake mechanism, as it was too close when down.

As for work; I found my interior took longer than the rest of the car put together. Lots of cutting, trying, cutting, trying for ever it seemed.

Quick update..Been working on the dashboard for the past 3 weeks. It's taking a while. Im trying to remodel it but keep the classic look. Ive have no air con so I need some dash vents. I'm putting two in the dash and two in the centre console.

The MX5 inserts are recessed in an MX5 so ive cut out and created some template inserts which accept the MX5 Dash vents.

The inserts are oversized by about 2mm so that it accepts leather trim. It sems to work ok with some test leather.

Is the hole below the vent in your picture for the BMW light switch? If so, I would trial fit that as it is a big old lump with the wiring connector fitted and could foul your vent and/or the speedo or tacho housing. Mine is extremely tight for space and I don't have dash vents!

My dash is based on the tribute 250 dash. I dont know if maybe there's a little more space than the dna dash but I had no trouble getting a vent in there with the original z3 light switch and also a button for the rear fog

yes. Ive test fitted it with the light housing and all ok. Ive fixed the plastic section to the back for it. Good call though!! Got to get a horn in there too lol
