@mrscalex (and actually, *everyone else*) thanks as well for your input, and the thread related to cutting the axis side...

I'm /fairly/ sure I should be ok once the washer is cut, the two parts move a little bit, given enough persuasion. won't rotate, but they 'rock' a bit, so they are not entirely seized. Seriously that mirror assembly is both completely overbuilt AND fragile at the same time, hard to beat :)

Anyway, I'm glad I planned a bit longer than a few hours for that job ;-) Also had to repair the inside of the door card that has been 'pulled' bit too carelessly before, and superglue&clamp some of the leather trim.
Every cloud ;)

Tony.

Well all ordered, as well as fresh cutting discs.

Did you guys also repaint the main part of the mirror, mine had picked a few scrapes and dents. I'm thinking of sanding down to a nice finish, then re-paint it over. Not entirely sure if it's colored plastic or if it has been painted...

The mirror cover?

Almost certainly painted. BMW supply it as an unpainted spare anyway.

I think it depends how good your spraying is. The mirror base is tucked away so is more forgiving if the finish isn't perfect.

The cover stands out much more.

Success! I used a variation of the cut, a bit sideway so I didn't even have to cut the base that much for the washer to break. Used the Persuader to remove it and everything fell apart as expected...
I I went ahead and sanded everything, including the plastic. Applied a couple of thin coats of etch primer, let it dry and applied a couple of coats of regular primer. That's all I can do today anyway as it started to rain.

I also applied some 'stone guard' spray paint to the aluminium chassis, bolt, and spring.

Tomorrow, color, then multiple coats of clear to seal the lot and reassembly, hopefully this week-end.

To remove starlocs I cut across 2 or 3 tangs on the inside. That way it doesn't cut the base. Not a big deal though.
