Heres it dismantled the long bit with the two terminals is the bit that snaps off the board causing loss of the pump and the light.

I have the connector released! Pair of molegrips, on the handle, upward and 45% pull and it loosened. Not so simple!. Will now clean, see if there's any improvement in conditions.

Getting there, and learning.

Well, I've had a good full day in the garage tinkering with that ABS unit!

I spent last night reading up what I could on the unit, the thread misterpie quoted, and various youtube videos, and came to the conclusion that it must be the control module. it seems that just the age of them will produce the sort of problems, dry joints, and from what I read it seems that no car will get away from these problems given time!

So using the videos as a guide, I went about removing the unit.

First that plug! I had to get a pair of molegrips on the handle, some wd40 down the side, and eventually, using far more force than I was happy with it moved! And in no time the plug was off, having an upward and outward travel to it.

All looked fairly clean, but I sprayed it with wd40, and worked the plug on/off a few times, in an effort to clean the pins etc.

Time for a road test, just in case! No change.

So now to remove the unit. That was very easy, it was off in 10 mins. Can see how its a sealed unit, and needs to be opened. Here goes!

Having the unit apart, I can see that the only area that looked iffy was the 2 terminals for the long pin, so they were resoldered. Fairly easy!

Off to test the car.

The light went out within 100 yards! Bingo! problems solved!

I went for a couple of miles run, no problems!

Returned home, turned off/on a half dozens times, light now goes out! Relax.

Or so I thought. Came back to the car 30 mins later, turned on ignition, light stays on. :(

Went for a mile run, didn't go out. :( Stopped and checked connector, off/on, all ok.

But heading off, within 100 yards, light goes out! Returned home, off/on with ignition, light goes out. Hmm. Waite 30 mins, tried again, light stayed on.

Went for another run, light stayed on, but stopped, reset plug, within 100 yards again, light goes out!

Repeated above 2 more times. same results.

I don't know! SI batteries?

Can ABS units be swapped or do they need programming?

Thanks for everybodys help and reading!

Sounds like a dodgy connection still.

On the one I did, the 2 single pin's (red) where really bad and obvious dry joints. I went over the bigger ones (blue) on the other multiway socket as they looked a little worse for wear. May be worth having a another look and perhaps re-do the 2 pins just encase.
The barrel resistor circled green dropped off on the one I did - I put that down to mateys ham_fisted_ness when removing the cover ;-)
You can swap controllers but will need coding so not so simple.

I've taken it out again, and gone over every one of those connections with new solder.

All looked Ok, and now not only looks Ok, but I'm sure it's Ok!

First start up light was on, but only 100yds from home, light has gone out!.

So I'll try again in 30 mins, see if it's out on start up or not.

I think this is good fun!

Yes the modules can be swapped. Just get one with the same part number. You will need to recode the module using a laptop and NCS unless it comes from an identical model.

The coding can appear daunting but to be honest if you are cutting open black boxes and soldering them up you should make mincemeat of that. The cable is about £40 with the software.

If you don't recode the module the ABS light will go out but the system may not function as intended.

The module and pump can be picked up for £25-£45 on ebay with the pump. But the pumps are pretty bulletproof and it's only the module you'll likely make use of.
