Hi all
I have a Z3, 2.2i automatic, only done 50K in the 15 years I have owned it, it’s a 2000 reg,
This year, an engine management light appeared my local garage cannot fix it, I have paid them a lot of money but they still can’t fix it, the code relates to “ air getting into the engine “
They have replaced all the relevant hoses, but no luck.
Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem

I am in South Wales near Cardiff,
The garage did not tel me the code, but they replaced the intake pipe, and re set the light, but 35 miles later it came back on and now they want to remove the inlet manifold, that sounds expensive and I don’t think they are confident that will fix it?

There are several members in your general area so I'm fairly sure someone could read the codes for you and progress things from there.

Hi and from Surrey, there are several potential sources of an air leak, you definitely need to get the codes read.

Not so sure it will be a hose issue as I have had 3 Z3's all 3 at some point had the typical split hose and not one of them displayed codes for the issue, if its a split hose there is a good chance you will experience rough idle and or loss of power.
I got one of them very cheap as the rough idle gave me a good bargaining point

Split intake hoses can definitely throw a light. Though they often don’t.

My best guess is as Tony says that they changed the upper hose and didn’t do the lower. Or vice versa. The lower hose is a lot more difficult to check.

But there are other hoses in the frame. And other causes.

But to be honest your garage sounds inept. Don’t let them take the inlet manifold off.

You can bring the car to me in Swansea if you want. I’ve got all the diagnostic kit. I can at least get the codes off and look into them. I might even be able to fix it. My problem is finding the time but will do my best!

Hi mate.. I've had a few issues with air leaks on my 2.2.. I have changed upper and lower air hoses and @colb in Newport also ran a smoke test on the car.. leaks were found using the smoke test .. fault codes would go and come back.. after several more tests and a new rocker cover gasket we found the the air leak was from a crack in the cam cover... I'm not machanically minded I left that to @colb and @hansomjackuk both living in souyh wales... but that maybe the problem your having... it was hard to diagnose with without the smoke test and without removing the cam cover

Not sure if that means anything to anyone

Hi mate. . Just like to add that there are some great forum members around your area who I have found to be very helpful with members who have issues with their cars... I live in Bristol and have travelled to Newport a number of times to have my car looked at by Colin and alun... great source of information and advice ...

It means the fuel mixture has too much air in it across multiple cylinders. From which you can say 2 things. The fault is in a component shared by multiple cylinders. It's probably but not definitely an air leak.

I would start with all rubber hoses. You're lucky where you are because if you ask @colb nicely he's built a rather nice smoke machine which will blow smoke through your engine and the leak will make itself obvious from where you see it escaping. And lucky for you he's in South Wales.

If that proves negative (and I'll lay odds it won't) then we can make some further suggestions where to look, eg the MAF.

same code as was set on @Davester2.2sport .. that was a few vacuum leaks the worse one unfortunaltely was the plastic rocker cover cracked allowing vacuum leak and smoke tester to pour smoke out of cylinder 4 plughole area. Hopefully yours will not be as bad...

Just caught up with your thread, as Dave has said earlier he has the same problem that we are working on in the Z Shed South Wales. Sounds like you need a smoke test, I would avoid the garage you have been using, they sound inept at sorting this but quite good at emptying your wallet!!
Send me a PM and we can test your car with the smoke tester to pinpoint the leak.
We meet up at my place to do work on the cars and have trips out during the year to car shows etc as well as the zroadster events.

All quiet on the Dewis thread, are you still out there, just fixed Daves car that had the same codes as yours, in his case it was cracks in the plastic cam cover, fitted a replacement to day and car was fixed. You need a smoke test to see where yours is leaking and setting those codes.
