Hope we're all enjoying the weather our cars are made for:thumbsup:
Require some advise please on an engine noise I've recently noticed.
Z3 2.8 twin vanos engine, on cold start up a rattle/vibrating noise from the vanos housing appears when increasing revs & goes at around 2500/3000 revs.
Virtually non existent when warm ?
Not sure if this is the sign of vanos wear but definitely coming from that area ?

From my experience (different Vanos to yours) oil temp made no difference to the vanos growl. The pressure involved in the vanos are huge and the size of the holes the oil goes through are minute, are you running the correct oil? To higher viscosity of oil would make the vanos struggle when the oil is cold and thicker. Hopefully someone will come on and offer some further advice.

Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40 is what I'm running through it.
Just can't think what else it could be coming from that area ?

Correct oil, not sure then, plenty of folks on here with loads of experience of vanos issues, someone will be along.

Yes it sounds like VANOS rattle.

I recommend getting this kit and installing it. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-BMW-...918272&hash=item4b53efd2ce:g:DhgAAOSw8-lb3HeY

It has both the anti rattle rings and the new pin roller bearings. I have found that you need to replace these parts when you have the VANOS rattle.

It is also especially important to test fit the VANOS piston onto the cam before you put it back into the housing (note the screw is left hand tread). This is to ensure that the piston fits snug (very little axial play) and will still rotate freely. If it is not snug then it may still rattle.

Thanks Murray.
I think the vanos kit is worth doing anyway at 76000 miles & if it cures the problem then happy days
