Not been to the airport before but been up and down the M42 plenty. It has an extended average speed camera set and at that time of the morning I would suggest it would be very busy so I'd leave earlier to get there. At least that way you are there, albeit early if all goes well.

I used to travel into Birmingham via M42 and A45 at 7a.m and it wasn't good news, heavens knows what it would be like at 8 a.m. You may be better hotelling it the night before for peace of mind.

i think we better leave real early then... i rather be at the parking place as soon as possible... theres only an hour from check in airport to the parking....... purple parking hams hall 10;30 gate closes at airport 11.40.... i going to ring purple parking tomorrow to see if we can get in there earlier to park...

thanks for the advice.

+1 for hotel night before, takes all the worry away.

yeah i wish we had done the hotel... bit short notice now though... we have to amend the parking and i expect there be costs incurred for doing that...

It is busy at rush hour time usually quietens down a bit from 9.00 but still busy.
There are major roadworks on the M5 nearer Birmingham and M6 but recommended diversion is along the M42 so this adds to the traffic.

It is also slow where the M40 splits off the M42 3 lanes into 2 so watch the lane markings.

Again keep a close eye on the lane markings as you go over the M6 and again where the M6 toll splits off the M42. the signs are pretty poor and changing lanes isn't too easy.

An alternative is to come off the M42 at junction 6 and pick up the A45 to next roundabout left onto A452 and then keep left onto A446 which is dual carriageway and then 3rd exit at 5th roundabout into Hams Hall.

As Brian said - M5 is a nightmare so do give yourself plenty of time.
Hams Hall is north of Birmingham airport so you're going go past is and come back. Traffic tends to tail back at the M42/M6 junction so I'd agree the A45/A446 might be a good option. Even then theres likely to be traffic up to the M6 junction on the A446. Take a look at traffic on Google maps while you're on the M42 northbound if you can and don't have a wizard satnav.

I agree with@Tfp get a hotel the night before,I have a 35 mile commute around that area and leave before 7 in the morning everyday ,it's takes well over an hour,on a good run, have a great flight anyway, hopefully it's not with Ryanair
Jimmy.

Oops just read your first post ,and it's Ryanair your flying with,my fingers are crossed for you after hearing the stories over the last few days,on the plus side Birmingham airport is very good ,lots off shops restaurants and seating areas , and easy to use, enjoy the Malaga sunshine.
Jimmy.

ok thanks all for the advice. i have spoken to the parking place and they said we can turn up when we like so we be leaving south wales about 6;00 in the morning just to be sure... may even be earlier if we cant sleep.. i would prefer to get to the aiport and wait there... flight is with Ryanair and not on the cancellation list so hopefully it will all go well..

i have another look at your suggestions to get off junctions a bit earlier and maybe take another route.. i was just going by what purple parking suggested...
