Hi All

I have recently purchased an OEM rear luggage rack and case and would like to know the following.

has anyone fitted the luggage rack without drilling holes through the boot? If so did you use feet and straps?

if not has anyone installed a luggage rack by drilling through the boot?

thanks

Mark

:welcome: to the forum from West Cumbria. @Bozzy drilled the holes into his boot lid I believe.

If it where me I would have a second boot lid with the rack on it as I hate to see the 4 plugs on the boot lid when the rack is not in use

They are designed to fit using the supplied fitting kit which I suspect you don't have? I have the fitting instructions which I think @Bozzy has also if required. There are pre stamped 'dimples' on the underside of the bootlid to mark where you need to drill - you have to look hard to see them!

Thank you for all the rapid responses, all I have is the rack that has 4 bolts at the bottom with nuts on the end that have handles on them.
If you could message me the fitting details that would be great. Also do you need spacers for the rack?
I understand that there is also a kit to cover the holes when the rack is not in use, does anyone know if these can still be purchased?

my other thought was to try to change the bolts to some kind of suction foot and use straps like you would have on a bike rack.
Has anyone done this?

thanks

You need spacers between the outer skin and the inner frame to stop the outer skin deforming downwards. Your best bet is to do the job as designed, if you don't want to drill the boot lid you have bought the wrong sort of rack - sorry.
Easiest way is to look for a bootlid for sale that has the fitting kit installed - the one I've shown is one I bought off a forum member who changed it for a non molested boot lid. They do come up and usually cheap. When rack not fitted there are plugs that resemble coach bolts that go in - they are harder to get. I was lucky in buying a brand new rack with full fitting kit that is on the car shown. I got the spare boot lid with fittings for my pre facelift zed.

Yes as Andy and Adrian said I drilled the boot lid to accommodate the rack.
Really easy if you use the pre stamped marks on underside of the boot lid.
Use a small pilot drill from the underside, then I used a step drill from above with the boot lid closed.
Protect the exposed bare metal with bit of paint where the holes are drilled.

If you don't fancy doing that, I still have a strap on type boot rack for sale if you're interested.

Steve.

ps. So I've been told.

Hi All

thanks for all of the help and advice, I managed to get some spacers, washers and neoprene washers from Screwfix and have now managed to install the rack.

went out in the rain yesterday and I can confirm it is waterproof
