Lowering cholesterol

Mine are/were recently 5.2 and Doc says I'm ok. Body shape is no indication either, my missus has a figure like a duck, fat arse, short legs and runs around like a nutter and hers is around 3. Mind you, she doesn't eat much fried food but she takes Guinness intravenously
If your wife reads that your cholesterol level will be the least of your worries!

Dangerous ground Garry =))

I've according to blood tests had high cholesterol for years. After being very Ill in 2015 where I spent 9 weeks on hospital it dropped. They tell me it's gone up again yet after having an angiogram in July after they suspected I had Angina my results from that were excellent so make of it want you wish. They have tried 3 times to put me on statins and upto now i have refused. Porridge is good, eat what you like in moderation, I love cheese but it's one of the worst foods going.

My cholesterol is now quite low. Since having a double by-pass 5 years ago and being diagnosed with lung cancer 6 months ago (now hopefully dealt with ) I have been on the following daily pills,
Atorvastatin 40mg Once daily
Bisoprolol 1.25mg Once daily
Omeprazole 20mg Once daily (see below)
Aspirin 75mg Once daily
Losartan Potassium 50mg Once daily

From 22nd Nov 2018
Omeprazoleee dosage increased to 40mg Ranitidine 150mg Once daily

All with no side effects apart from the fact that I rattle when I walk!
I guess the best thing is listen to the medical team and take their advice.

Fascinating read. Thanks for sharing. It’s not something I’ve thought too much about, but probably time to have checked again. Last test a few years ago was below the revised safe level and told not to worry. Diet is fairly good with little fried food. A decent amount of walking - between 4 and 10 miles a day and now swimming a couple of miles a week too.
Maybe too little fruit, too much milk, sugar and chocolate - Always room for improvement though.

What happened with your eye?
I had a ruptured blood vessel in my eye and all I could see, was a large red dot in front of one eye one morning when i woke up. It took eight weeks to clear fully.
The hyperlipidemia that I have first showed up in an eye test, when they noticed white semi circles in the bottom of my pupils, That is now a full circle, Apparently it is due to fatty cholesterol deposits.

In my case I was driving my MGB V8 on the way to a car show and about 100 miles from home when I suddenly lost the sight in my left eye. It was like a grey curtain came down. The right eye was fine and while I was looking for a safe place to stop, the left eye cleared. The whole thing only lasted about 3 minutes. It is called amourosis fugax and is caused by a temporary blockage of the vessels behind the eye.

It's interesting the low doses of statin some of you take. I have taken 40mg simvastatin daily for 6 years without any side effects at all.

The last time the love of my life needed treatment they gave her the following:

Advanced Formula motor flush
6.5 litres of SynerZ oil
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Air filter
6x Bosch spark plugs

She seems much healthier now.

That must have been very frightening! Hope you are OK now and that it does not happen again.

Thank you, but at the time I didn't realise that it was anything like a blocked blood vessel. I just thought "How strange" and then it cleared, so I continued with my day at the car show, then I drove to Glasgow (about 80 miles) to attend a concert with my wife, who I met at the venue. Then we drove home afterwards (about 30 miles) and I said to her "A funny thing happened this morning". When she heard, she said I should see someone the next day. In fact it was 5 days before I could get to see the doc, and he sent me that day to the stroke clinic. After batteries of tests they told me they had no idea why it happened as I had no risk factors except a slightly raised cholesterol. I'm slim, eat sensibly, take some exercise (not enough), don't smoke, and have normal blood pressure. My artery scan showed no plaque build up. They said it will probably never recur. I hope they are right!

My biggest problem is I hate veg with a passion. Only eat peas, carrots and sweetcorn. I have been moaned at all my life about not eating enough veg, but if you can't stomach it you can't stomach it.

My grandfather smoked 40 woodbine a day and consumed 8 pints of beer a day - lived to be 35.:(
I tried the "live fast die young " thing, but didn't live fast enough.;)

Wow!

Such a great response, thank you everyone.

Just making my porridge.

Planning some exercise, after Xmas.
If you like them add blue berries to your porridge. Supposedly it's a super fruit which lowers cholesterol and they taste great in porridge.

The thing with super foods is that you need to eat them in quite large quantities so you'll need a bigger bowl

He's got a lorry ;)

Tony.

Oh OK. A big pick up then ?=))
