We don't know the full story or depth of investigation to this story and probably never will do. Problem here is how many "quality" cars and potential death traps have these rebuilding guys produced in the past and as usual the only reason they do it is because they make big profits as a lot of the parts are procured from dubious means for little or no money. The quality of engineering that goes into these rebuilds/remodelling of vehicles is totally unknown, until sometimes when they are involved in an accident. As already mentioned how much strengthening to accommodate the M3 bits was done to this car as it was down as a 2 litre diesel. Its not just the mechanicals either its the quality of the electrics/wire loom & electronics mods that could be a potential hazard causing a fire or accident particularly in an example like this. We don't know if the police might of uncovered a whole criminal stolen parts/remodelling operation and wanted to make a point, a bit over the top maybe as some people have mentioned but I would rather they did this (its not as if they are it doing every day) than let the parts be recycled as you could then run into all sorts of legal complications.
Again as already mentioned someone may have bought this car in good faith, but at some point the criminal element has come into play.
All just my thoughts, others may disagree but in this day and age there seems to an increase in this sort of thing and as usual there they affect the innocent parties either by having their cars stolen or buying what looks to be a very attractive remodelled car.

I hope that my TFS doesn't get pulled as a cut'n'shut because it has a Scaglietti-like front and a Zagato-like rear. I hadn't thought of that when I planned it.
"Yes it's a fair cop Officer, I cut the front off a £6m Ferrari and the back off a £500k Aston, joined them together and then chopped off the roof."

Just a quick aside. @Zont mentions click bait earlier in the thread.

I have just finished watching a Prime/Netflix (cannot remember which) series called Clickbait - worrying stuff and a good watch.

I saw this pop up on my feed the other day so did a bit of investigation. The car won car of the show at a BMW meeting in 2019 (https://bmwshow.co.uk/report2019.php). Apparently the car was made up of many stolen parts. The 'cut and shut' part may have been a different roof that was fitted, but you know how papers like to exaggerate.

Also, someone was claiming the court had ordered the police to give the car back, but couldn't because it had been crushed, so the police had to pay compensation. This is what the police had to say about that:
"Thanks for all your comments. It’s interesting to read all your views and we are planning on having a Q&A later this week on this and related motoring matters.
Several people are commenting suggesting the car was somehow illegally crushed, that our action is at odds with a judge’s direction, and that the car’s owner has been paid compensation by us or that a large pay-out is pending.
To be clear, this is totally false.
We have not paid any compensation and no such court order has been made.
The car was made from at least four vehicles. Two were welded together very badly which was not only the verdict of our own vehicle examiner but an independent examiner appointed by the owner to inspect the car.
The vehicle was illegal and dangerous, which is why it was crushed."

The owner of the car (well, the guy who collected the car of the show award) also got sent down for being part of a stolen crime ring
