Woke up Tuesday morning to the great finding that some horrible little cretin had broken into my van during the night.
I had such a long day Monday I left all my things in the van and went straight to bed, so it's my own fault really.
But some f****r has got a lovely present of a briefcase with a windows surface pro 4 and a portable printer scanner. Over £1600 worth of gear.

To make things worse the police had no interest and haven't even filed a report or asked for a statement.

What confidence are we supposed to have in local forces when their manpower is spread so thinly that they can't be bothered to chase this up.

Well done on hitting jackpot in my van cause you've got away with it whoever you are...

Scumbags

I can sympathize with you I've also given up on the police as they only hand out crime numbers for you to claim against your insurance well that's what it felt like.

Police will have recorded the crime. They will also be chasing it up but most of what happens goes on without the knowledge of the public. Trust me when I say a theft from motor vehicle can't be filed until quite a lot of boxes have been ticked and a lot of work has gone into it.

Interesting to read this Mac it's just a shame the info doesn't filter down to the victim of crime.

It always happens after a moments lack of attention. Scumbags indeed.
Did you have any tracking software on the laptop? It's worthwhile to improve the chances of finding out where it pops up on the internet. Applies to mobile phones too.

Sorry to hear about your mishap - all insured and laptop password protected?

I genuinely know how you feel Davy, I had my business robbed in the early 90's and it's a rotten feeling. Hope you get sorted quickly mate.

Tony.

Unfortunately it's not covered due to the items being classed as removable they shouldn't have been left in there. So I'm out of pocket to replace them.

I hope they are chasing it up, but I'm yet to provide a statement. It will be wiped and sold already to someone in a small shop for cash.

There was tracking software on it as standard but I've tried to locate it without luck. It needs to be connected to the Internet.
Lesson learned..

What worries me most is now they know that sort of stuff is about, they will be back

I'm so very sorry to hear about this Davy. It takes time and effort to repair everything when there many other important tasks to be completed. The loss of property that you needed to conduct your daily business has to be replaced. But most importantly, the feeling of being taken advantage of has, at least to me, a very detrimental effect. I'm not the type of person that would intentionally harm someone so when something is done to me, it truly has an emotional effect on me that takes time to heal. While everything will be replaced in time to bring you back to your normal operational efficiency, it might take longer to heal the hurt to you that's been done. I am hoping you can overcome the emotional effect on you as quickly as the material one. Frankie

How very heartbreaking :p
I'd be really upset :(
Hopefully as the saying goes ..........
What goes around comes around .........
This kind of thing makes me so angry
As we all work so hard for our wages at the end of the week
And some low life comes and steal it

So the one time you leave valuables in the van it gets turned over? Is that just coincidence? Did you leave the gear in view in the cab?

At least there's a possibility that you might be able to track it. I guess it depends if it's someone who knows nothing about laptops that uses it. I hope you had a reasonable password that no-one could guess.
It's times like this that preventing boot from an external drive stops anyone from just re-imaging the machine.

If it does turn up, can you remotely wipe it or have you set the tracking software to do that anyway?
Do you have the serial number of the machine too?

Agree - sadly that now you've been 'done' you're at greater risk of future break-ins. Can you put a security camera to monitor where you park? Keep a hungry German Shepard in the back?

With regards to the statement, it's only needed for a case file for court. Until an offender is identified it's not an efficient use of time taking one. An account of the circumstances is enough to be getting on with in the first instance.

Ouch surface pro 4. Nice machine, so small and powerful.

I have a hard shell case around it, terrified of dropping it!

Keep an eye on your local second hand shops and gumtree, maybe they could be that arrogant and sell it there! Mm maybe I should have some discreet engraving done...

You can get really cheap ex lease business spec Dells and Hp's as a stop gap (I mean like £100) on eBay with warranty etc.

Proberly worth a call to your local CEX etc in your area to pass on the serial number in case the toe rag tries to sell it. Makes you wonder if you've been watched by this oppertunatist piece of sh***.

Might be worth a punt to ask one of your mates to put up a wanted cash waiting in your local gumtree.

Really feel for your but I hope it won't spoil your Christmas.

Keep an eye on the van, a mate of mine had his van broken into and all his kit nicked and the insurance would not pay out, as you have said, because he should have removed it or parked up in a secure place (workshop, garage, etc) two weeks later they came back, found nothing in the van, so nicked the van.....

IT is very common for these scum to return after a couple of weeks fully expecting that you've replaced what they stole from you, and steal the replacements.

Tony
