Just wondering whether the phrase ‘Loom of Doom’ refers to a specific part of the loom which is prone to creating issues, or is it used as a generic description when talking about wiring problems?

I know, I need to get out more! :)

Paul, it's the part of the loom that goes from the body to the boot lid. It is prone to problems. It's on the LHS as you look at the boot by the hinge.

The main area where the wire breakages tend to be, in my experience with 2 x Z3's anyway, is where the wiring loom is held in place by the plastic clip on the left hand boot hinge.
I actually repaired my silver zed only last weekend. I removed the plastic clip altogether and have tethered the loom to the hinge with a cable tie. I'll take a photo later and edit this post.
In my case 5 of the nine wires were broken and were probably only kept together because they were tightly wrapped in the loom. The only symptoms I had was the intermittent operation of the central locking and setting of the alarm.
It was an easy fix though, only took about an hour all in.

Thanks Garry. To make my life easier, do you know which colour wire is the third brake light?

If anyone is interested there are loom of doom repair kits available on ebay I can look them up if anyone interested. You need to do some soldering but easy enough

All fixed.
I have soldered the broken wire back together but I will now order the loom repair kit as two other wires were cut half way through as well.
Thanks everyone, this forum is amazing!
