Looking for a Z (Now found & Built!)

So, another update.

With parts starting to use up a bit too much floor space in the office, I took the opportunity on a dry afternoon to have a poke around in the arches and examine the sills a bit more closely.

With my other cars in winter hibernation, I'm stuck in the drive, but at least i can let the power hose loose.

First up, off with the wheels. They're heading off for a refurb in a brighter silver finish anyway. First impressions, not bad. Bit dirty, but the arch lips look fine. Just those sills.... concerned.....

So, let's get the arch liners off..... oh dear,, loads of dirt and the inside of the sill really not looking great.....

DSC_1743.webp

I gave the sill a little wiggle and it started to break apart.....

DSC_1779.webp

Ok, so lets look past the sills for now....

Out came the power hose with a Citrus foam, quick clean up....Everything else looks great actually, no chassis corrosion anywhere. Even the rear springs are in great condition with just slight paint flaking at the bottom. Never mind about that, they'll not be staying there much longer anyway.

Next up, I asked my dad to drop the spare wheel out, so we could clean that up too. 10 mins later, still not out.... Ok, my turn.... oh look and nice little guide on the boot floor flappy thing. Yes, it helps to start on point 1, rather than point 9..... hehe. Anyway, down it came and quite clear it's never been used. Again, nothing nasty, just dirt so that got cleaned up.

Ding dong.... the postman arrived with more treats.... great I thought. Oh, it's the wheel centers and the recon'd front calipers.

The calipers look grand tho we'll be painting them before fitting.

Lets have a look at these 'genuine' wheel centers..... eh, NO!
So much for this ebay special offer, as these are cheap knock-offs at just under OEM prices in cheap packets with some rather lazy quality labels with the OEM part number code printed on them. Sorry BMW, I shouldn't have strayed, but it was 2am when I ordered them and you weren't open! Lesson learnt, and back these pieces of crap go.

DSC_1750.webp

So, on to the front wheel.... off with the liner.... lol. Look how much dirt has gathered!

DSC_1756.webp

In saying that, hardly anything too nasty going on, so cleaned up and moved on....

DSC_1765.webp

Over to the other side....

DSC_1783.webp

With all 4 arches stripped of their dirt and liners, and now wearing my wifes F20 18" rims (as she still on her Winters), I gave it a quick rinse and another coat of aqua wax as i'm trying to build up as much weather protection as possible. All done for the day and my dad headed home with the wheels which should be back with us early next week.

Btw, the F20 rims look awesome on a Z and the huge offset is perfect to avoid any fitment issues!
It was dark by the time I was tidying up so didn't get a photo, but will grab a few tomorrow..

If the weathers looking promising for Feb (haven't checked), then I'm hoping to pull the cover of one of these which will give me some garage space to start the real work on the Z.

Final act for the day was to pull the trigger on some HEL brake and clutch lines. With the new brake disks and calipers looking so good on the office floor, the boring black rubber hoses just didn't look like they should make the cut.

The S/S hoses are well worth the effort, did mine a few weeks ago.

Tony.

Yup. Done the same on all my cars in the past.

As promised, F20 M Sport 18's on a Widebody Z3 (without center caps...)

Ok so, 18's at standard height look a bit wrong, but 2 mins of Photoshop modding later....

Ok, so that's a bit extreme , but we'll end up somewhere in between...

Will look very nice Aaron. Crack on!

Tony.

SLAM IT!

looks ace

my front and rear arches were the same

Just had a look through your build and I see the sill lips were just as nasty...

Did you replace them yet?
Got quoted £250 for a pair of new sills from BMW. Doesn't seem too bad. Bit worried about getting a good paint match tho...

Or does anyone make some 'rust proof' plastic or carbon ones?
Seems a bit daft to use such thin metal down there where I don't think it add's anything structural.

I'm in exactly the same boat

£250 is about right from the quotes i've got but i'm worried about having to get the doors painted too otherwise it will look off (although my car had the bonnet done and its not too obvious)

@Stormy_be makes fibreglass replicas but shipping to the Uk is an issue.

another member on here was looking at getting a batch made.

i want to fit fibreglass ones as they will be future proof and like you say, nothing structural

ive seen some other for sale for £90 per side but at that price id rather by metal ones and then underseal / protect them

I'm going to get struck down I'm sure but here goes.

Keep it standard.

I'm just one of those who believe cars should be kept looking how they left the factory, even down to the radio.

Oh oh..... well today we.... ripped out the radio!

DSC_1806.webp

And since it was a nice dry day, we pulled out the seats to fix the bushes...
DSC_1798.webp

Who designed these? Get in the sea!
DSC_1801.webp

Those new bushes needed far more sanding that I'd expected but a dremel with sanding attachment made short work of it.

Anyway, with the seats back in, the difference was noticed straight away. Nice an solid with no wobble.

Not much else to report.

Took the chance to give the carpets a once over with some shampoo, the floor mats a go with a Vax-type thing and give the interior a good clean.

Hoping to get the wheels back mid week and if things are quiet, take Thursday off work to continue with the project.

Next time, it'll be time to start on those brakes and fit an Alpine CD/MP3 player I had lying about. My dad wants to waste/spend some money on a DAB/Bluetooth unit, but I'd rather save where we can for now. He's only done half a mile of driving in the car, and i think he's only ever turned left, lol, but I'm not sure we want to total up the spend just yet.

Is the radio that's being removed for sale?? Please PM ME if it is. JIM

Oh, not sure. We hadn't thought abut selling. Just thought it would end up with my other OEM-never-to-be-looked-at-again collection....
DSC_1812 (1).webp

I'll speak to my dad and see what he wants to do.

That's the first time i've seen a zed in that colour, and I love it. Do you want to sell it? =))=))

As for my suspension decisions, we're still not sure what way to go. I know entry-level coilovers seem wrong, but also know, even on their softest setting, my KW's would be too uncomfortable for my dad on a long journey, but AP, V-maxx and Apex all seem to avoid any negative reviews and shouldn't be particularly heavily damped. The AP is basically a budget budget KW so surely can't be too bad on the performance side either. (ST being the 'budget' non-stainless KW)

I had the TA technix coilovers and changed them to AP's.... what a transformation,
The AP.s are great. not too firm but handling and roadholding is where I want it, and the height of the car can be set too

Aaron your zed is really coming on now by the summer its going to be a really nice looking (which it already is ) and well sorted zed

Don't know if these might be of use to you
http://r.ebay.com/znok8Z

I got them for mine a few week ago done a few hundred miles in them now and i would say that braking feels more controlled, steering sharper only minor downside depending on how you look at it is the more direct steering makes the wheel a bit more lively over rutted sections. Stephen.

Oh i'm sure. BMW seem to make a habit of using a fairly low grade rubber for their bushes and other components etc. However, we're going poly bushes throughout and will be fitting along with the suspension when it arrives.

Quick update...

DSC_1818.webp

Not the biggest of jobs, but since it had just arrived, seemed a good way to kill 30 seconds at lunch time.

Much less 90's!

However, my dad's still talking about DAB. Anyone fitted a DAB to theirs?
Did the original aerial do the job, or did you have a mount something additional?
I know we'd need a splitter for the cable to feed the DAB input even if the original cabling was up to the job, but assuming it's not.

Next question for you seasoned Z-ers, the wing mirror glass. Do you get used to it?
Ok, I've only driven the car once, and my dad has barely turned the wheels but first impression of the asymmetrical convex one side/flat the other seemed a bit weird.

I'm assuming the glass we have is original, so the drivers side (which is supposedly 'flat') seemed to create some serious blind spots.
Thinking an idea solution would be to use a convex glass on the right (drivers side) off a LHD model. Quick look on realoem would have me thinking part #51168397882 (LHD passenger mirror) would be just the thing. Anyone else done this? or is it just something you get used to? Or is some cheap ebay glass the answer?

I've some parts to order from BMW in the next few days and can't decide whether to stick this on my list or not.
