.....Surprise, its another Z3. That makes 3 in the Zed Shed. This one is a doer upper and sell, so should not be around for long. Currently it is a bladder shaker at 100 km/hr, so lots to do.

Yet it is an Estoril Individual Model with sports seats, side impact air bags, M sport suspension (means its lower and inch or two) and sitting on 17" rims. The 1.9 L with Auto is very zippy around town, so it may take me a long time to get it all sorted.

Already have a list of 27 repairs to do, from fitting a new rear window and new tie rods to cleaning everything. Its filthy. The biggest dilemma is how do you take off the wheels when there are BMW security lug bolts and no adapter tool? Have purchased all sorts of sockets and trox tools today to hammer into the splines in prep for when I have new lug bolts in hand. Anyone have a better suggestion?

Over all, very pleased with the purchase, got it cheap and the parts list ordered today have not amounted to much yet. Most of it from international suppliers, so it will take a while for it all to turn up. In the mean time I have lots to do on it.

Nice little project :thumbsup:

Had the same issue a couple of years ago with wheel bolts. I took the car to a tyre garage and they somehow hammered on an adapter that they then used to remove the bolts. Didn’t cost much.
 
When I had to get the spline type nut off staceys i hammered in a 1/2 inch extension bar into it. The nut was mega tight so this should work
 
Looks ok in the photos Murray, but then they always do;). It'll keep you quiet for a bit anyway:thumbsup:.
Can't go wrong with a blue Zed:whistle:. Other opinions are available:)

Or, given a mig welder, weld a decent size nut to the head of the bolt and wind it out. Mate of mine used to do this a lot when he worked in a garage down south.

Great tip here as the heat imparted by the welding also aids removal.

Hi

Thanks for all the advice on removing the security bolts. I have purchased a few cheap sockets of around the right size and a large Trox key. Once I have replacement lug bolts in hand, I'll see what can be made to fit and remove the bolts.

My local BMW dealer is 2 1/2 hours (130 km) way, so will see what I can do first before making the trip.

One word of warning Murray if those bolts are so tight that you can snap a 30" knuckle bar on them , and they could be, once you have tried hammering something into them there little hope of the BMW key fitting and working. Been there, done that, often. My advice is when you get those old security bolts out replace them with standard bolts. When did you last hear of anyone having the wheels nicked?
