I did similar damage to a caravan tyre a few years ago. We met another vehicle on a single track road just after an almighty storm and I pulled over as far as possible into a deep puddle to let him through but as I pulled away there was an almighty bang. Turns out that there was a huge crater in said puddle and the inside edge of the tyre slid down into the bottom of it ripping the sidewall like Tony's photo but also bending the alloy rim outwards. The shock was great enough to shatter a glass heat shield at the side of the gas rings so i do not know how anybody could sustain that much damage to the actual car tyre without knowing about it!

I agree, you could not do that and not know when it occurred. We went up into the Lincs. Wolds the other week and, in Shirl's car we had to keep tight to the inside of a bend, and there was a huge crater there which we just avoided. I was imagining a cracked alloy rim at best!
