I have a 2000 BMW roadster z3 2.5 with 12,000 miles on it. The EML light has came on dash twice. First time the engine died. It stated back up in a few minutes and I drove it home. 2nd time engine started missing close to home with EML and service engine light on in yellow. Overnight the alarms went away and I started it back but did not drive it. I purchased an Autophix 7910 code reader/scanner and round 20 pin adapter. Soon as I hooked the 7910 and adapter to round port and turned key to position 2 the EML light came on. 7910 did not power up. Disconnected 7910 and tried to start engine would crank over without stating. Can someone pls help me? I do not have the money to take it to a dealer.

Hi Mike, welcome from me near Lincoln, UK. Try connecting the scanner to the OBD port under the dashboard in the cabin. The 20 pin sockets do sometimes get corroded and won't make contact. The socket in the car reads engine and Auto gearbox faults.

Thanks for your reply. I did connect it to inside obdll port scanner came on entered car info and did auto and manual scans error code no communications with car. Tried everything would not work. I checked voltage on round 20 pin connector had voltage on all but 2 female pins and think they are grounds, had continuity to ground number 7 & 9 pins

Did the scanner power up when connected to inside OBD port?
As you said the car had previously cut out on you then restarted (twice) I suspect you have 2 issues. From the sounds of it my guess would be inlet camshaft position sensor failed but that is just s gut feeling. Do you have another vehicle you can connect the scanner to, to verify it actually works. I'm assuming you bought a new scanner?

The scanner did not read it comes on but will not communicate with car
Have you tried the scanner on a different vehicle Mike? That may tell You if there’s an issue with the scanner, or, the car.

Tony.
